W hen early images of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild circulated a few years ago , fans speculated that it’s traditionally male lead might by a woman this time—or at least playable as either gender. But the game’s official unveiling at E3 this week quashed that theory, disappointing some .
I asked Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma about his design rationale for the character in light of the rumors. Here’s what he told me:
“Back during the Ocarina of Time days, I wanted Link to be gender neutral. I wanted the player to think ‘Maybe Link is a boy or a girl.’ If you saw Link as a guy, he’d have more of a feminine touch. Or vice versa, if you related to Link as a girl, it was with more of a masculine aspect. I really wanted the designer to encompass more of a gender-neutral figure. So I’ve always thought that for either female or male players, I wanted them to be able to relate to Link.”
“During the development of Twilight Princess , I went a different route and created a version of Link that was more masculine. But after Twilight Princess I went back to the drawing board and decided Link should be a more gender-neutral character. Hence I created the version of Link that you see in Breath of the Wild . As far as gender goes, Link is definitely a male, but I wanted to create a character where anybody would be able to relate to the character.”
“So that’s why I think the rumor went around that Link could be a female. Because maybe the users were able to relate in that way.”
Last year, Nintendo unveiled a new character called Linkle , clearly a more explicitly female version of Link. She was an exclusive character for the 3DS game Hyrule Warriors Legends, which came out earlier this year.
In a longer interview with Aonuma, he describes the approach Nintendo took to creating the new title’s vast open world, a departure for the series.

Link goes out in a dress and happens to run into Zelda in Hateno Village. He then proceeds to try his best to not let her find out who he is.
I've thought way too many times about Link in a dress and I started drawing him in one.
(See the end of the work for more notes .)
Link wasn’t someone with a lot of free time, but one thing he did enjoy doing in his free time was going out in a pretty dress. Granted, he didn’t own a lot of dresses, but occasionally, he would go out in one of the few ones he owned. Dresses could be difficult to navigate in, so it was something Link learned over time. He didn’t want to say cross-dressing was a guilty pleasure of his, but it was not something he could really admit to indulging in. And he believed he was hiding it quite well, it seemed no one recognized him. He was relatively quiet, but when he did talk, he didn’t sound distantly masculine or feminine, and he always thanked Hylia for his slim waist and wide hips, making him appear more feminine, even with the lack of breasts.

Link was currently walking into Hateno Village through the arch entrance. It was nice to just walk around, though he still brought a sword, shield, and bow with him. He had even brought his sheikah slate, albeit hidden under his white chemise dress. His waist was adorned with a sky blue bow, sharing the same color as his earrings. Instead of his usual ponytail, he decided to pin part of his hair back with a matching bow, letting the rest lay limply on his shoulder. He also wore a silver necklace, which housed a beautiful blue sapphire he had found on his travels. It was very sunny out, but it wasn’t all that hot.
Despite how many times he had been here, as well as how often he came to Hateno, with his house being there and all, he couldn’t help but look around like a first-time visitor. It was not his first time visiting dressed this way, but only a few times had he been here this way. There weren’t that many moments when he and Zelda weren’t together. Usually, he would be with her or around the castle, but the princess had other duties she had to attend to, and the king said it was alright for him to go out. He smiled, his cheeks turning pink at the thought of said princess.
Zelda had golden hair that shone brightly in the sun. She had recently cut it to shoulder length. He had always loved her long, flowing hair, so he expected to hate the new haircut, but strangely, he absolutely loved it. Granted, he loved everything about Zelda. He was apprehensive to admit it, but he had gained quite the crush on the royal. She really understood him, it seemed, and she had said before that’s how she felt about Link. They were close friends for a reason, after all. Link was so caught up in his thoughts that he almost fell over when he crashed into someone.
“Oh my! I’m extremely sorry. Are you alright?” He recognized her voice immediately. Zelda . He quickly bowed his head, giving her a curtsy in a shambled attempt at a greeting. He was afraid that if he spoke, or if they even met eyes, she would know everything. “Oh, you needn’t be so polite. I apologize for asking, but if you’re free, how would you like to accompany me to East Wind?” Link was extremely confused on why she had asked him, despite “not knowing” him, but agreed to come along anyway. He regretted agreeing almost instantly, it probably wasn’t a good idea, yet it seemed his body moved on its own, wanting to stay with Zelda for as long as possible.
When they arrived, Zelda was quick to buy all of the store’s Tabantha wheat. She thanked Pruce, motioning for Link to continue following her. “Recently, I’ve been wanting to try cooking. I never really thought about doing it myself, but sometimes, when I see people cook, they seem so happy. I’ve heard it’s a good stress reliever and therapeutic. I figured now was a good time as any to test it.” She had a beautiful, and bright, smile on her face. Whenever Link saw her smile, he was rendered speechless. She looked beautiful all the time, but when she was genuinely happy, she looked like a goddess. “Come on! I need a few apples, and there are some apple trees up the hill.”
It wasn’t long before the two of them were seated in the grass under one of the said apple trees. Zelda had collected as many as she could reach, which meant she was sporting a handful of apples. She seemed quite content to just sit there with the wind blowing through her hair. He distantly wondered what Zelda planned on making. He only knew of two ingredients she planned to use. Perhaps she was planning on making fruitcake, it is her favorite after all.
She let out a joyful sigh, collapsing onto the grass. Link couldn’t help but laugh, covering his mouth with his hand in an attempt to muffle the sound. But it was so quiet with just the two of them there, he wouldn’t be surprised if she had heard it. After a minute, she sat up, leaning against Link. He instinctively tensed up, his face flushing red. Zelda fiddled with the sapphire necklace he wore before looking up at him. It was the first time since running into each other that they had made eye contact. Link did his best not to avert his eyes, but it felt like she was staring into his soul. She smiled at him, though, which made him feel significantly less nervous.
“You look really pretty, Link.” Her voice was soft and quiet as she said it, a whisper almost lost in the wind, but he could hear it loud and clear.
Perhaps he should have been scared or embarrassed. Perhaps he should have asked her how she knew it was him. Perhaps he should have been surprised she found out, but he wasn’t any of those things, and even he was confused by it. Zelda truly was the person who understood him the best.
I think this is the quickest I've ever written a fanfic. It took me like 2 days, which is short considering I give up halfway on a lot of things and then MAYBE decide to pick them up again months later. A lot of times though, I end up rewriting it, which means I give up halfway all over again.
