4.0 out of 5 stars NOT for beginner or inexperienced sewers.
Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017
This book is pretty indepth. It is a book for intermediate or experienced sewers and designers though. If you are new to Lingerie sewing, like I am, this is NOT a good book to START with. I've only been sewing about a year, but for that year I have made some pretty difficult projects (for a beginner) such as a minkie and cuddle fabric quilt. Although I would not recommend this book for beginners or inexperienced sewers, I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to anyone who is an intermediate sewer with an understanding of basic pattern drafting and a passion for designing your own lingerie. This book does NOT have "patterns", it has small picture diagrams. It explains in detail the sewing terms she uses so you can measure and trace your own patterns. If you are comfortable taking measurements to make say a shirt and making it with those measurements this is going to be one of the best books you could purchase about lingerie. If you are intimidated by the slope aspect of making panties, it does explain how to do this a page or two before the page pictured. I thought about returning this book to get one more suited to my experience level, but decided to keep it because it is something I can work toward. Once I have more experience, I have no doubt I could custom make anything in this book because of the authors clear directions. Hopefully this review will help you decide if this is the right book for you! Happy sewing.
2.0 out of 5 stars Useful at a high level, but disappointing in the details
Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2018
This book is good for reference, but I am disappointed in the pattern drafting instructions. They make a lot of assumptions that will not work for most people. The book uses standard measurements even in places where measurements vary greatly from person to person. For example, in the close fitting sloper section, the instructions use bust + 2" as 1/2 of the hip measurement. There is also the frequent assumption that the back and front of the garment should be an even 1/2 of the overall bust or hip circumference, which doesn't hold true for most people. The whole purpose of making a sloper is to make something that fits a particular person down to their individual measurements. These instructions take too many shortcuts to work for most people.

Serious design including boned foundation/ support garments and also beautiful embellishments, everything you would ever want to know about lingerie construction is included. Other books don't even come close to the depth of this book which not only includes patterns, but pattern drafting. This author not only knows her stuff, she is gifted at conveying it in easy to understand descriptions and drawings and the book itself is as beautiful as the lingerie; a real pleasure to peruse as well as a serious guide for the seamstress wishing to tackle this venue. I could not recommend this book more highly.

So far I have drafted the top for stretch wear and have achieved a fairly good pattern result. great diagrams and insight for patternmaking and design for lingerie. Not many books out there so we relish those we can get. I have turned to it a lot since I received it last year. If you want to design and sew your own or for others this is a great book to gain knowledge and move into real design.

This is the third lingerie design book I have purchased and Ms. Powell has covered each area thoroughly. The softcover (not paperback) and oversize is in keeping with the subject matter. I have not yet made any lingerie pattern from scratch but of the three books I have purchased this would be my choice to draft patterns.

I lovely book with some great information. I already have a few garments in mind that the book has inspired me to create. This is a great book and I'm glad I was able to add this to my technical library. Packed with usable information.

This book is fun & informative but if you did not go to design school you will be lost. And some of the former fashion photos are outdated, could should just basic designs but money spent.

Amazing book! There is nothing like it out there for lingerie design. It has step by step instructions for flat pattern making, in addition to inspirational photos.
