Let’s get this out of the way, right up top, so you don’t feel at any point like we led you astray: The Canyons is NOT a good movie.
The 2013 erotic thriller , which just hit Netflix today , began its life with lots of promise, namely because it was blessed with a terrific pedigree; it was penned by Bret Easton Ellis ( American Psycho , Less Than Zero ) and directed by Paul Schrader ( American Gigolo ). On top of that, the film was one of Kickstarter’s earliest success stories, with fans kicking in some $160,000 to see this film that ultimately starred a (seemingly) post-trainwreck Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. However, the film was sunk before the public even saw a single frame of footage, thanks to a disastrous PR blunder by the film’s producers. They invited a New York Times reporter named Stephen Rodrick to the set, which resulted in one of the most fascinating showbiz feature pieces of the last few years, entitled “Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan In Your Movie.”
You really should read the whole thing, but the TLDR version is this: It’s a nightmare to work with Lindsay Lohan. She repeatedly failed to show up to the set on time, she was an emotional basketcase, and she nearly shut down the entire production when she threatened not to shoot the pivotal scene of the film: a four-way sex scene. After refusing to leave her room for nearly three hours, Schrader ultimately convinced her to shoot the scene by dropping trou himself, filming the scene just as naked as his stars. It then took them 14 minutes to complete the scene, and immediately after calling cut, a decidedly not sober Lohan sped off down the PCH in her Porsche.
Well, as we mentioned up top, The Canyons is not a good film. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not an interesting film, at least in parts. The aforementioned four-way sex scene, for example, contains what we would argue is the definitive moment of Lindsay Lohan’s career to this point. Midway through the orgy, a topless Lohan breaks the fourth wall and stares directly into the camera lens; we dare you not to be mesmerized.
Those dead, depraved eyes have seen things that most of us have not. They’ve paid witness to that time when the late, late night morphs into the early, early morning so many times that the novelty has worn off. They’re the kind of eyes that have said “yes” when all of her other senses have screamed “no.” They’re the eyes of someone whose desperation for approval trumps everything else.
They’re eyes that remind us of Quint’s famous monologue in Jaws , when he tells the story of how sharks took out so many of his fellow Navy sailors after a Japanese torpedo sunk the USS Indianapolis in WWII:
Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he’s got…lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll’s eye. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be livin’. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white.
Anyway, like we keep repeating, The Canyons is not a good film. If you watch it front-to-back, you’ll probably end up frustrated (it is only about 100 minutes long, though, so you won’t be wasting TOO much of your time). That said, the orgy scene (which appears at about the 65 minute mark) is certainly worth watching, and not because it’s titillating. Rather, because it’s exactly the opposite of titillating. And that, in and of itself, is an accomplishment.
