Linda May stars in Nomadland, so let’s get to know the actress and her story. Is she a nomad in real life? The movie is now streaming on Disney Plus.
Nomadland is available to stream on Disney Plus from Friday, April 30th 2021 and is undoubtedly one of the most discussed and celebrated movies of the past year.
It won big at the 93rd Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director (Chloé Zhao), and Best Actress (Frances McDormand), while also being nominated for another three Oscars.
Additionally, it scored top prizes at the Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Golden Globe Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards.
Frances McDormand plays Fern, a nomad travelling the United States in her van after the passing of her husband. Many people who appear in the film are non-professional actors, and audiences are curious about Nomadland star Linda May…
The movie is based on Jessica Bruder’s 2017 nonfiction book of the same name which explores the life of nomads. During her research, she spent numerous years accompanying nomads across the country and got to know them closely, including Linda May.
Looking further back, Jessica wrote a Harper’s Magazine cover story called “The End of Retirement,” which looked into older Americans who couldn’t afford to retire, working for such companies as Amazon.
This led to the Nomadland book which centers on 64-year-old Linda May, a grandmother living in her Jeep working temporary jobs to save money and build a sustainable “Earthship” home, as noted by Time .
Jessica has said of documenting Linda’s life:
“One of the things that made Linda such a pleasure to document as a journalist was that she has a certain unselfconsciousness about her. Whether she was talking to me and being recorded or talking to somebody in a restaurant or some random people she just met because she always strikes up a conversation, she was always the same person.”

Essentially, real nomads that were included in Jessica’s work were subsequently cast in the 2020 film.
Variety includes that Jessica introduced Linda to the director – Chloé Zhao – during the screenwriting process, and she then went to visit Linda at some land she had bought in Douglas, where she was thinking of settling.
When visiting, Linda was with other nomads, and she explains: “The other ladies and Chloe and I set up a place to sit, and told stories, and talked for a few hours.”
In turn, Linda was written into the screenplay and hired to play a version of herself.

In a touching post back in March, she wrote: “I am so proud to be a part of this project. Jessica and Chloé have given a spotlight to those who are in the shadows. I hope this movie makes people feel they can open their hearts to their neighbours. Just by extending a warm smile or a hello, that could make that person’s day.”
She added: “It could make that person in the shadows not feel invisible…”
Nomadland is now available to stream on Disney+.
