As Darlene Schepini, personal assistant to hank kingsley on HBO's Late-Night talk show parody the Larry Sanders show, knokout actress Linda Doucett was a self-described cosmic barbie doll. Garry Shandling's former fiancee is opening up about the comedian's sudden death at the age of 66 last week and the reason the two split two decades ago after a seven-year relationship.
Former Playboy model and actress Linda Doucett began dating Shandling in 1987 after the two met at the birthday party of a mutual friend, and became engaged a few years later.
They split however in 1994 because, according to Doucett, the lifelong bachelor refused to have children over fears they might be born with the same defective gene that killed his brother - cystic fibrosis.
'The only reason we broke up was because I wanted a child and Garry didn't,' Doucett told InTouch .
'I was 40 and really wanted a baby and he was afraid of having a child because his brother died of an illness and he was always afraid that his child could have it.'
Shandling was just 10 when his brother Barry died of cystic fibrosis shortly after his family moved to Arizona so the young boy could get better treatment.

Doucett said in her interview that despite their split, she and Shandling had been close over the past few years, up until his death from a massive heart attack last Thursday.
'We were friends. We were in touch the whole time, until last week. We were working on our issues, trying to put everything behind us and move on,' said Doucett.
'There are some things in life where you don’t get complete closure. But the last time we spoke, he said, "We’re working on closure," and we both laughed and said, "Maybe in the next life."'
The issues between the two came after their split when Doucett filed a suit against her ex in December 1995 accusing him of 'sex discrimination and sexual harassment' after she was fired from The Larry Sanders Show.
Doucett had starred on the program for the first few seasons but lost her job when she and Shandling split, leading her to say in papers filed in California court that she was fired because a 'sexual relationship [was] a condition of [her] employment.'
A rep for Shandling said at the time; 'We are saddened by the false and outrageous charges. This matter will unfortunately be dealt with in the appropriate legal channels.'
The two eventually settled the lawsuit out of court for $1million, and Doucett returned for the series finale, where she reprised her role as ditzy assistant Darlene Chapinni.
'Our life together [was] a turbulent love story. We were great together. We had a big connection, but it’s difficult when your life becomes public. We were working on it,' said Doucett.
A source close to Shandling meanwhile said that he believes the comedian did want to have children, especially later in life.
'He loved his life, but that would probably be his main regret — never settling down with a wife and having children.,' said the source.
They then added; 'He liked to be alone. But in the end, being alone is what may have killed him. If someone had been in that home with him, he might be alive today.'

TMZ reported that the comedian had been experiencing shortness of breath and aches last Wednesday afternoon and called over a doctor friend who gave him a check up and told him that if he was still in pain on Thursday he should get to a hospital.
Shandling called 911 at around 10am the next morning and fell unconscious while on the phone with the dispatcher.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the call and took Shandling to a nearby hospital after breaking down the door of his home.
Because Shandling was in good health and his death so sudden, his doctor has yet to sign off on his death certificate until an official investigation is done by the Los Angeles County Coroner.
Shandling began his career doing stand-up, which led to writing jobs on shows including Sanford and Son and Welcome Back, Kotter.
Soon after he began to guest host for Johnny Carson, and was considered as a possible replacement after Carson left his job on The Tonight Show.
He did not get the job, but in 1986 created It's Garry Shandling's Show, which would run until 1990 and get nominated for four Emmy Awards.
Two years after that he found success again on television with The Larry Sanders Show, one of the first original programs to ever run on HBO.
It was about the cast and crew of a late-night talk show, and Shandling said he based large parts of the show on his time filling in for Carson on The Tonight Show.
That show was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards, and in its final season in 1998 Shandling won for the first time in the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series category.
He was also twice nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical for his work on Larry Sanders.
More recently he found a new audience of younger fans thanks to his role in two big Marvel films - Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 2.
It is not known if he was set to appear or had filmed any other Marvel films at the time of his death.
Shandling also recently appeared in an episode of Jerry Seinfeld's web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee that aired on New Year's Day.
The episode was called It's Great that Gary Shandling is Still Alive.

Linda L. Doucett Durst [2] (born 1958 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American actress and nude model . She is most notable for her supporting role on The Larry Sanders Show and appearing in Playboy magazine. She also appeared in Herman's Head , Tales from the Crypt and a made-for-TV movie.

Doucett began her modeling career in high school and got her start in acting by working as an extra in music videos for bands such as Toto and The Beach Boys. [3]

From 1992-1994 she played Darlene Chapinni, a devoted assistant to the titular host's sidekick Hank Kingsley, on the popular HBO sitcom The Larry Sanders Show . She was a regular for the first three seasons and replaced by Scott Thompson in 1994 after the first episode of the fourth season.

In 1993 she posed in the September issue of Playboy magazine. The release of that issue of Playboy coincided with the episode Broadcast Nudes of The Larry Sanders Show where her character is fictionally asked to pose for Playboy as well.

Doucett met Garry Shandling at a party and dated from 1987 to 1994. [3] In 1994, when their relationship ended, Shandling had her dismissed from The Larry Sanders Show . In turn, Doucett filed a lawsuit against Shandling and producer Brad Grey's company, Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, for sexual harassment and wrongful termination, which was settled out of court in 1997 for $1 million. In 2008, Doucett testified along with Garry Shandling, Sylvester Stallone, and others against Anthony Pellicano for illegal wiretapping and other crimes. [5]
