Linda J. Chase is a composer, scholar, and flutist. Her music weaves elements of chamber music, jazz and contemporary improvisation with spoken word and interdisciplinary arts. She has received composition awards from the Japan Foundation, Grand Canyon National Park, Kaji Aso Studio, Morris Graves Institute, Berklee College of Music, Studio Red Top and ASCAP. [1]

Linda J. Chase was born in La Jolla, California. She received her Ph.D. from Prescott College in 2017. Her dissertation, "Contemplative Ecoaesthetics Through Musical Arts: Reflection, Resonance, and Resilience"was published by ProQuest in December of 2017. [2] her master's degree in Contemporary Improvisation from New England Conservatory in 2000, an Artist Diploma in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music in 1990, and her bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from the Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington in 1983. Professor Chase currently teaches composition, performance, music and spirituality, ecomusicology, and interdisciplinary arts at Berklee College of Music, and is also an instructor in Contemporary Improvisation at New England Conservatory.

In 2016 - 2017, she served as composer in residence at Old Cambridge Baptist Church where she collaborated with Reverend Dr. Harvey G. Cox to create "The City is Burning," a multi-media oratorio based on multi-faith sacred texts and contemplating how the arts can build community, nurture compassion and deepen awareness that inspires action. [3]

“The music of the oratorio is eclectic, ranging from art song to free improvisation to subcontinental raga to Latin to hymn tune and gospel...Chase handles all of the colors and transitions of her multi-part oratorio with aplomb. Chase’s iconoclastic genre-crossing oratorio proceeds from dark to light, and wins its struggle for transcendence.” [4]

In 2010, Chase received a Japan Foundation Fellowship [5] . Soon after her return, she collaborated with poet Jane Hirshfield in performances of her original compositions "The Ink Dark Moon" (2012) and "Hope is the Hardest Love We Carry" (2017) at New England Conservatory and Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. [6]

"Linda Chase, who teaches interdisciplinary musical collaboration, presented a compelling original chamber composition-improvisation concert featuring internationally renowned poet Jane Hirshfield. They drew heavily on recent experiences in Japan--Linda's during the earthquake/tsunami." [7]

“Standing apart from the other (concerts) in the series, this collaboration with award-winning poet, (Jane Hirshfield) and flautist Linda Chase was a beautiful exploration of the ethereal relationship between music and the spoken word. Unique in concept, the performers created a sonic picture of the various facets of life lyricly portrayed in the ancient text The Ink Dark Moon by Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikibu. Each improvisation elegantly illuminated poetry on life, love, loss, dreams, nature and spirituality with imaginative avant garde textures...The pinnacle of the event was a dramatic performance of music accompanying a series of haunting visual images of the Japanese tsunami in 2011. Hirshfield’s poem of resilience and hope ended the event on a profound note.” [8]

In 2012, she was Artist in Residence at Grand Canyon National Park and created “Grand Canyon Sketches” for string quartet and voice. [9] Her other major compositions include “Poetic Reflections,” a musical journey based on the works of 13th century poet Jelaluddin Balkhi (Rumi). Her award-winning piece, "Tanabata Star Festival," was based on poetry by artist, poet, and singer Kaji Aso and the Japanese legend. In 2008, she collaborated with composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist Hankus Netsky in forming the ensemble "Another Realm." [10] She also composed an original score for “Tartuffe,” performed at the American Repertory Theatre Institute in Cambridge, MA. She was awarded two artist residencies at the Morris Graves Institute in Northern California. She is a member of Landscape Music Composers Network and New Music USA.

Linda Chase

It has been a joy writing these poems. As I have grown in the Lord (abiding in His Presence) the Holy Spirit has inspired me by giving me different topics or themes to express and reciprocate my love and gratitude. As you read these poems you will find yourself drawn closer and closer to God. You will realize how significant and loved you are by Him. You will get a greater appreciation of God as the Great Creator. And, through these poems, you will find how God uses His creation to point to greater truths. You will even see His creation crying out in gratitude. We all go through difficult times, which are a part of life, but these poems will give you the assurance that God will be with you every step of the way. In these poems you will discover that He will see you through the storms in your life and you will realize that God will use all things to bring you closer to Him. He will also use what you go through to even bless you and bring beauty from it. Isaiah 61:3 says “He will give you a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of a spirit of despair”…paraphrased. Through these poems you will discover many of the treasures you find in God. Treasures whose values have no measure. Start digging… Linda Chase is a wife, mother, retired elementary teacher, and now author of a work of poems/psalms inspired by her love of God and her relationship with Him. Mrs. Chase attended Rio Grande College in southern Ohio, and while rearing three children, completed her studies at Virginia State College. She taught as an elementary teacher and later received certification in the Discovery program and worked with children with learning disabilities during the end of her career. She has always been involved with church activities, having taught children in Sunday school for a number of years. She is currently a prayer intercessor in the Isiah 61 prayer ministry. In this book Mrs. Chase seeks to share that love of God and hopes what she has written will draw others to Him.

I grew up on the North Shore of Long Island and later attended an excellent, arty college called Bennington in Vermont. There I did an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing by producing a collection of poems under the supervision of Stanley Edgar Hyman. In those days Cummings, Frost and Stevens were my heroes. Later, after I moved to San Francisco, I focused on the beat poets; Snyder, Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti. After moving to the UK in 1968, my idols became all songsters—Dylan, Young, Cohen, Mitchell and Browne. Some of this intense adoration I attribute to nostalgia and missing North America.
In San Francisco and Edinburgh I was a theatre costume designer over a period of 18 years. When our family moved to Manchester, I became a Tai Chi teacher for the next 20 years. In the early 80s Oli Senior and I founded a small magazine called Cahoots, which was concerned with alternative medicine, personal growth and spiritual practice. After five years we passed it on to others to run. Poetry and song lyrics were always simmering in the background, but it wasn’t until my 50th birthday that I decided to put poetry first once again. I subscribed to literary journals and treated myself to a residential Arvon course each year. I started submitting poems to journals and eventually had work accepted.
In 1994 I published a pamphlet with Smith/Doorstop. I had already published a few poems in The North, and Peter Sansom, editor of both the magazine and the press, had been very approachable. The resulting little pink booklet went out of print pretty fast but the title poem, ‘Young Men Dancing’, was included in the Forward anthology that year.
Then Louise Hudson, editor of another small press, Fatchance, approached me about doing a first collection. The book, These Goodbyes , appeared in 1995. Since Fatchance Press was very small, the book was only available for sale through Louise or me, but it managed to get reviewed in several small and medium sized poetry magazines.
Still a beginner in contemporary British poetry, I enrolled at Manchester Metropolitan University on the MA course in Creative Writing. I loved being a student. I even attended undergraduate lectures and seminars. My tutors included Michael Schmidt, Jeffrey Wainwright, Simon Armitage and Carol Ann Duffy. I had truly come to poetry heaven! From Michael I learned that poetry had in fact begun before 1950 and that it even existed outside of the United States. From Jeffrey I learned how to assess and consider the written word. From Simon I learned to stand behind my own work and from Carol Ann I learned to be daring. But the most exciting moment came after I finished the course work, when Michael invited me to submit a manuscript to Carcanet. When I
