Awesome or a pain in the ass, depending on the day.
Awesome because, really, this office would not run nearly as smoothly without me. I order office supplies. Buy the groceries. Scan, fax, and email all kinds of documents for all kinds of things, business and personal. I'm the first impression people get of our company. I help out in sales and accounting. I'm a jack of all trades so every day is a little bit different.

Pain in the ass because I'm the first line of defense against solicitors and telemarketers who don't seem to understand they are never getting by me. I get yelled at by unhappy customers because I'm the one who answers the phone. Sometimes I have to track a person down to get the person on the phone assistance or an answer. Sometimes the people in the office forget to tell me, the person in front, if they have clients coming to the office or if they are going to be off work for the day so I end up looking like an ass because I'm clueless. I can't really have a shitty hair day or a "fuck it" day when it comes to my looks. I'm out there for everyone to see.
And here is a tip for anyone who wants to call to speak to someone or just drops in to the office without an appointment: Be nice to the secretary. I do control if you are going to speak to anyone or how long you may have to wait. If you are an ass to me, I'll let my boss know and she takes my opinions into consideration when she deals with you. If I say leave a message or give me your number so they can call you back on their time, do it because you will never get to talk to anyone if you don't. And I can't help it if they don't want to talk to you after that so STOP CALLING EVERY TWO HOURS!
I know this one, I started working part time as a secretary (receptionist, office manager, office slave ;)) for a small (3 attorney) law firm at the end of July.
It's family law, largely focused on cases where the state has intervened. Actually, when I was a social worker we argued in court for our position against these lawyers. In Oregon social workers (who work for DHS, child welfare) often 'act as lawyers' in the courtroom and that was probably my favorite part of that job.

In Oregon social workers (who work for DHS, child welfare) often 'act as lawyers' in the courtroom and that was probably my favorite part of that job.
The lawyers I work for were among my favorites, they're driven and intense but also very human and pro-parent. What I mean by pro-parent is that they believe children are better with their parents whenever possible and they fight for that in court. I was somewhat of an anomalous social worker in that I agree with them, I hated pulling kids out of homes and I worked hard to return them.
But, that was my old job. Now I'm a 'secretary'. It's hard for me not to feel some shame about it, to be honest. When people ask what I do I always just stare at them unable to tell them. I'm not really using my degree, I only work 20 hours a week so that I can incorporate all of my kids activities into my schedule and still volunteer in classrooms and such.
I do a lot of paperwork, scheduling, and filing. I also draft briefs to set over court hearings, withdraw the attorneys from cases, etc. The nice part is, the people I work for don't want me to get bored and quit so they keep my mind stimulated and I really love my job. It's just enough money to get by, right now that's all I'm looking for.
I feel like I'm still a housewife at work sometimes, I do the dishes and make coffee, water plants and coordinate things. I do that nurturing thing that comes naturally to me and I usually don't mind. Sometimes I refuse to do dishes for a few days because I'm so sick of them (with three kids I feel like I'm always doing dishes at home) but the legal assistants just do them when I get like that and we go on with life.
I do a lot of random fixing of things that nobody else has time to do, there's more opportunities for problem solving issues than you might think. Even if it's just reading a manual to fix the postage meter, it's something different all of the time and I like that.
I'm so appreciative to have a job that's extremely flexible and supportive of my life as a single parent. I wish I weren't ashamed to say that this is my job, but whatever I'm sure I'll work past that in one way or another.
The hardest part? Talking on the phone, I freaking hate it!!!
