Said when a daughter takes after her mother in terms of mannerisms, interests, behavior, etc. Tammy's headstrong and impatient—like mother, like daughter. A: "My only interest is in making money." B: "Like mother, like daughter, I see."

Prov. Daughters resemble their mothers.; Daughters tend to do what their mothers did before them. My mother loved sweets, and every time my father saw me with a cookie in my hand, he would sigh, "Like mother, like daughter." Jill: Gina's beautiful. Jane: Like mother, like daughter; her mother's gorgeous, too.

Because it's important to maintain the collective memory.
This week I pulled the garlic! 100 heads here, and one more that was not in the rows. You know how it goes — you find a little shoot somewhere and pop it in a random bed…
Last year I planted around 80, and that lasted me all year. I still have some! So this coming year I won’t be conservative in my use. Lots of roasted garlic in our future! And these heads are giant!
I am hopeful about the rest of my harvest, but other than the cucumbers and the early abundant lettuce that is now over, it’s very slow in coming.
I wanted to share with you a new book from my son-in-law John Folley. The drawings are so charming and appealing! It’s called The Handsome Little Cygnet. (affiliate link)
This sweet story includes little hidden visual gems to appeal to older children’s sense of curiosity. The illustrations are lush and rewarding. So many contemporary books for children are ugly — their whole conception and execution is ugly. Why do we subject our impressionable young ones to these images?
John’s illustrations put ugliness in perspective, helping the uncertain reader make just judgments and reassuring child and parent of the rightness of beauty and order.
If you are up for it, maybe we can do a giveaway in a bit!
The “alternate to ‘conversion therapy’ is a slippery slope. It appears to accommodate not only disorder but sin. ‘Gay’ celibacy and ‘gay’ friendships are still unchaste. The Church must be clear. Jesus came to break the back of any and all moral disorder in our lives. Leave space for the Cross, and don’t crucify Jesus’ members who champion its power.”

Bridget and I had a gallivant. It was great! Big Springs, MO -- where I became a hat person. We did dispersed camping and I hope you are proud of me because I *am* 61 years old With Suki and kids -- and that's the chariot *after* the carwash, which the boys mightily enjoyed! We left the house here in Central Massachusetts on Father's Day (sorry, Chief!*) and headed west. We camped out all the way to Utah and then headed home via Suki's new house in Colorado and then on to our dear friends located in strategic spots along the trek back, in St. Louis (Mary Elizabeth!) and western PA (Shyla!). Amazing how you really can drive in a pretty much straight line 21+ hours from the Rockies! *He wanted to come, but didn't want to do so much driving, and ended up having lots of … [Read More...]
I'm going on a little vacation. I'm heading out camping with my youngest, Bridget -- we are going on a bit of a road trip, heading off from Massachusetts and aiming for Utah. I have never done anything like this, although we used to go camping a bunch when our kids were younger. But I'm excited for it (though completely unprepared, due to events that popped themselves into my timeline, as such things tend to do). I'm also awaiting the final word on my big Opus, The Summa Domestica: Order and Wonder in the Home, which should be going to the printer any day now. So now is a good time to sign out for a bit! What I wrote last week struck a chord with many of you, so I am leaving it here for you to ponder. I really do think that the little oratories, the ones inside and the ones … [Read More...]
We have a winner of the giveaway of the signed copy of my new book! If it is you, an email will be wending its way, so look for it! Thank you all for your kind and encouraging comments about God Has No Grandchildren! You really know how to make a gal's week! Now my turn: For this week only, receive 20% off your order of God Has No Grandchildren from Arouca Press! Use the code PiusXI (case sensitive) to receive a 20% discount on the book. This offer is good until June 14th! And -- I had an idea... How about this? If you organize a reading group to study Casti Connubii using my guided reading, God Has No Grandchildren, I will join you via some form of online conferencing (like Zoom or whatever platform you prefer if I can make it work) for your last meeting! I will talk … [Read More...]
Almost five years ago, I published the Kindle version of my book, God Has No Grandchildren: A guided reading of Pius XI's encyclical Casti Connubii, On Chaste Marriage. I had to publish it myself, because as I say in the introduction, who is interested in reading a dusty old encyclical? But funnily enough, thousands of you did want to read it. Many of you had read my posts and were excited to have an edited version, all in one place, that you could take to your study. You wanted to think more about what the Church teaches about marriage. You were willing to put in the work to find out. You got together in reading groups, you read it alone, you read it with your spouse. And after you read it, you exclaimed, "I never knew... " "This changed my marriage... " "We had another baby... " … [Read More...]
After Christmas I had a talk with Rosie's mother-in-law, my dear friend Ann, about our respective christening gowns and their need for rehabilitation. (At that point we were both expecting a new grandchild; mine has arrived, hers is still in the oven!) You can see the gowns in this post if you are interested. They are remarkably similar! And each of us felt that the gown belonging to us needed an overhaul. Ann's has so many little tears that she thinks she has to have it replicated. Mine (which comes from my husband's family -- I was baptized as an adult!) is getting thin but otherwise in remarkably good shape. But I always have thought it's not quite long enough. Somehow it gets bunched up during the baptism and the full effect of a nice long gown doesn't come through in … [Read More...]
