Exploring traditional markets, historic towns, ancient temples, rice fields, hiking trails, and hipster cafes, no less. After reading so much about Dali from Chinese novels or rather, from watching period dramas inspired by these novels , it was great to finally be able to see Dali in real life. Sure, parts of Dali were tuned to cash in on the tourist dollar, but its old world charm and simple way of life still remains largely intact, a nice change of pace from Kunming. Continuing on my overland trip from Singapore to Moscow , the bus from Kunming arrived in Dali New City, or Xiaguan, somewhat late at night, and after another transfer by local bus to Dali Old Town, I found my hostel with the help of friends I made along the way. Bed was great, perfect for an end to a long day at Lufeng Dinosaur Valley. Local markets have always fascinated me so I had to make the trip to check it out. Locals were clearly amused by our presence. Despite the proximity to tourist hotspot Dali, there were hardly any tourists both Chinese and foreigners here. After that sensory overdosed morning, we made our way down south along the lake towards Xizhou , a well preserved village known for its Bai architecture. It was about a 1 — 2 hour stroll between the two villages from Shaping , with amazing scenery of rice fields backdropped by the Cangshan mountain range on one side, and lined by the poetic Erhai on the other. It looked like really hard work. Nonetheless, the farmers, like the locals at the market, seemed amused that tourists would pop by, and stood up to wave to us as we walked past. Definitely more tourists at Xizhou than the places visited earlier in the day. It was a nice stroll around the village, curiously peeking into traditional shops and houses. Would recommend trying it out if you see it around! On long trips such as this would end up travelling for 52 days straight this time, probably the longest in a long while, since it was my grad trip , I try to pace myself out a bit. I spent the rest of the day taking a break in the hostel, and joined in a communal steamboat for dinner. A Chinese friend I met in Kunming also arrived later that day. It seemed like a really popular route for Chinese tourists from other cities to complete Yunnan from bottom Kunming to top Shangri-la , and for the really adventurous, to continue their tour into Tibet and beyond. Cangshan is a mountain range lining Dali city, and hikes along the top suitable for beginners offer views of Dali, Erhai, and the surrounding area. Nevertheless great to experience in person,. The trail led nicely out back towards Dali Old City, passing through some local markets on the way. Met up with a few other friends I made in Kunming for dinner. With half a day left in Dali, I decided to visit what is probably the most iconic attraction in Dali, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple. The temple was a short walk away from the town center. Buses are available for the short commute too. The weather was perfect for taking photos so I helped myself to a spammage of shots. The temple grounds were huge and it takes probably at least 2 hours to cover the different levels and layers of the temple. Although large parts of the temple looked refurbished, it was still an interesting and eye opening experience exploring the temple grounds. Hopeful that there might be couple of interesting artefacts inside, given the long and illustrious history of the temple. Some members of the royal family of an ancient kingdom are also supposedly buried on the temple grounds. With the temple done it was time to go. I quickly grabbed a bowl of noodles before getting to the bus station for the bus from Dali to Lijiang , the next stop of my trip. And that concluded a very interesting visit to the city of Dali. Right out of a Chinese novel. More delicious cold noodles. Not sure what this is called but I only saw it in Dali. Some traditional dessert. Not very spectacular, but sufficient for an adventure. This little fella followed us all the way from the foot of the mountains to the top and later back down again before we lost him in a crowd of people. View from the top, overlooking Erhai Lake. A little too cloudy. Donkeys ready for the worn and weary. It could be costly. The long winding slippery road back down to town. Open air market selling everything and anything. Into the walled ancient city. Some grilled cheese. Really crowded in Dali Old Town. Claypot rice noodles. Rice noodles are really popular in Yunnan. Sour plum tea. Similar to the pancake seen in the previous day, but less fancy. Sunlight streaming in from the mountains to the town centre. The usual tourist fare. Old shops, new stuffs. Fruits and tourists. Looking for a shave. City gates at night. Yunnan dish? Fried Chinese sausages. Mushroom soup. Town centre at night. Sausage in a rice flour wrap. Third one behind the trees. Temple in the clouds. With Erhai Lake in the distance. Certain areas were more frequented by tour groups as they dropped off at various points on buses, and walking alone allows for some space in between without the crush of the crowds. Temple grounds ascend steadily as it extends into Cangshan, so turning back every now and then allows great vistas overlooking Erhai Lake. Although this is not one of them. Chinese lion. Not sure which is fiercer. Behind every door a new story. Beautiful works of art. Door behind door behind door. The never ending chain of temples. Huge Buddha statue. Overlooking rice fields and the villages lining the lake. Wall of enlightenment. The three pagodas ever so prominent. Three pagodas and Cangshan. Some noodles. The bus to Lijiang. Dali and Lijiang are cities in Yunnan province, both with many ancient towns. We first arrived in Dali and spent three days visiting several places. Then, we rented a car and traveled from Xizhou ancient town to Lijiang. This was our first significant trip together. These ancient towns are quite extensive. During our time in Dali, we began by renting a motorbike to explore the area. Afterward, we visited Erhai Lake , a vast natural lake near the city and the ancient town. We explored the villages by the lake on a motorbike. The weather was pleasant with the wind, but it rained occasionally. The roads in the village were quite rough, and we ended up getting lost more than once. Dali is a picturesque and poetic city nestled beneath a mountain called Cangshan , where it snows in the winter. To the left lies a large lake named Erhai. In Dali, it blends modern and ancient town architecture, making it a place many dream of visiting. The first day we arrived in Dali, we discovered a unique restaurant where we enjoyed a hand-grabbed meal. Both of us were pleasantly surprised by it. Lijiang ancient town is located in the city center and is also known as Dayan ancient town. Just 20 minutes away, there is another large ancient town with fewer visitors called Shuhe ancient town. We didn't visit Shuhe because we were short on time, and Dayan provides everything conveniently. This ancient town is quite beautiful, even better than Dali Ancient Town, which we both agree on. Therefore, after our trip, we decided to return in the future to visit both Dayan and Shuhe. We have no idea how long we wandered in the town; we explored a bunch of cool places. There is a street with a very long screen along the ancient buildings. It feels like you are in a different world when you stand there. There are a bunch of bars and some cool performances. Zhangjiu really liked it. There are numerous paths in the town, and each one can lead you to discover something new. We stumbled upon a corner where people were performing live music on the city wall. All you needed to do was buy a bottle of beer to support them. We had a great time enjoying the music and the atmosphere there. This performance is a must-see when you are in the area. It's an indoor show. Another outdoor show, called Impression of Lijiang , takes place at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with the snow-capped mountain as a stunning backdrop. This show tells a tale of history, local culture, and a love story. Even though Reed didn't understand Chinese, the stunning stage performance made it worthwhile to watch. We took a day trip to the snow mountain, just an hour away from the city. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as sunny as it was in the city. It was very cloudy when we climbed the mountain, making it difficult to see anything at the top. However, the bad weather was only at the summit; the other scenic spots were still very beautiful. This is an ancient town located next to Erhai Lake on our way back to Dali. We did a self-driving tour around Erhai Lake. We followed the left side of the lake to Lijiang from Dali and the right side on our way back. On the right side, many people rented luxury cars to take photos beside the lake. Our last night, we returned to Dali and checked into a hotel next to Erhai Lake, where we witnessed a beautiful sunset. The hotel is also conveniently close to the airport. May Dali ancient town These ancient towns are quite extensive. Chongsheng Temple Three Towers Dali is a picturesque and poetic city nestled beneath a mountain called Cangshan , where it snows in the winter. Lijiang Lijiang ancient town is located in the city center and is also known as Dayan ancient town. QianGuQing Performance This performance is a must-see when you are in the area. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain We took a day trip to the snow mountain, just an hour away from the city. Erhai Lake Our last night, we returned to Dali and checked into a hotel next to Erhai Lake, where we witnessed a beautiful sunset. Share this.
