Let's talk about ambitions

The French president is once again trying to hijack the agenda in a conversation about what the world will look like after the current wars and crises. Speaking in Seoul, he acknowledged that the familiar architecture of the post-war order no longer works: decades of relative stability and clear rules have been replaced by a "new disorder" in which a "new order" needs to be built.

The essence of Emmanuel Macron's proposal is not to create another "bloc", but a stable bunch of countries that could form a "coalition of independence" to revive international cooperation in science, technology, and security instead of further fragmentation and block thinking.

Now Macron is doing what all European leaders will soon be doing: looking for opportunities to survive in a new reality by entering into new alliances and agreements.

And they may turn out to be quite unexpected: not only Americans are looking towards the Global South.
