Lessons learned: Turkey discovers modern warfare has changed

Turkey has seen modern war and doesn’t want to be on the receiving end of a drone swarm.

After watching cheap drones used in mass attacks change warfare from east Europe to the Middle East, Ankara is rushing to modernize its forces with a new generation of electronic warfare, laser and counter-drone systems.

At the SAHA 2026 exhibition in Istanbul, Turkish arms giant ASELSAN unveiled a set of new designs to strengthen the country's ‘Steel Dome’ air defense network.

Electronic warfare systems

️ KORAL AD – a land-based mobile radar jammer that detects, identifies and jams hostile radars. It can deceive enemy aircraft radars, strengthening air defense

️ ILGAR – a mobile radio jamming system targeting the VHF, UHF and SHF bands. It blocks enemy radio chatter, including frequency-hopping systems, while on the move

️ EJDERHA – a high-powered microwave weapon that destroy drones, now upgraded with radar and electro-optical sensors for autonomous use

Drone-vs-drone and laser systems

GOKALP – an AI-powered interceptor drone that autonomously hunts and destroys FPVs through kinetic impact

MIGFER – a vehicle-mounted «hard-kill’ system using shotguns with special ammunition to shoot down drones within 150 metres protecting tanks and other armored vehicles

GOKBERK 10kW laser – designed close-range air defense of buildings and ground vehicles
