Former Ohio sports coach Brooke Rosendale apologised to the victim's family in court
AN ENGAGED teacher who had lesbian sex with a 13-year-old pupil has been jailed for three years.
The young victim and her family looked on as Ohio teacher Brooke Rosendale, 27, was sentenced for one count of sexual battery.
The girls volleyball and basketball coach knew the victim from "other school programmes" and conducted the illegal affair off school grounds between January 4 and February 3 last year.
An inquiry started weeks after when the girl's parents got wind of their daughter's inappropriate relationship, reported the Toledo Blade.
Judge Reginald Routson told her: "You stepped across a line, a taboo that cannot be violated.
"There cannot be any sort of relationships between teachers and students and you betrayed a very important trust."
Rosendale said sorry to the parents of the student, saying: "I want to apologise to the family.
"I know I hurt them and I apologise."
The former sports coach also worked as a fifth grade intervention specialist before quitting her job soon after the revelations in March 2017.
She has also since voluntarily surrendered her teaching certificate, according to Assistant Hancock County Prosecutor Lora Manon.
Rosendale’s lawyer, Peter Halleck, told the court his client had accepted responsibility for her actions and had expressed remorse.
Reports state she was engaged to her partner in July 2016, just a few months before the sexual investigation was launched.
The Findlay Courier reported how Rosendale cut a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a single charge on January 26, after two more similar charges were stopped.
She would have faced up to 15 years in prison if she had been convicted of the original three charges.
Rosendale must now register as a Tier Three sex offender and pay $225 (£162) to the family of her former student.

Halle Berry had to answer difficult questions about her sexuality after accidentally showing her teenage daughter a lesbian sex scene she was in.
Halle Berry had to answer difficult questions about her sexuality after accidentally showing her teenage daughter a lesbian sex scene she was in.
The Hollywood actress, 55, plays a UFC fighter who beds a man — and a woman — in Netflix hit Bruised.
And she said 13-year-old Nahla was stunned when she saw the love scenes during an early screening, telling her superstar mum: “We need to have some conversations.”
Halle, who has made her directing debut with the sports drama — revealed her film editor unexpectedly jumped to the movie’s raunchiest moment during the screening.
She said: “So Nahla watches the love scene (with a man). She’s looking at me and she’s like, ‘Oh, whoa, Mum. Really? Wow!’ So then, my editor, who’s sitting next to me not really realising my daughter is there, says, ‘Go to the second love scene, I want to see what that looks like’. Well, that’s a love scene with a woman.
“My daughter’s like, ‘Whoa, Mum, we need to have some conversations. You didn’t tell me’.
“And I said, ‘Nahla, this is a movie, none of this is true. Like, none of this is real’. It started a conversation — really for the first time — about what I do and about playing characters and what’s real and what’s not real.
“She was asking, ‘How do you do that?’ and, ‘How does it make you feel?’ I explained those are some of the hardest scenes actors do, the most awkward. It’s not always fun.
“So I had a real conversation with my daughter about that, about my sexuality, about my work in the business and how hard I had to fight to do the film.”
Halle plays disgraced mixed martial arts fighter Jackie Justice, who is making a comeback while juggling personal issues.
A brief romance sparks between Jackie and tough trainer Bobbi Buddhakan (Sheila Atim) as she gets ready to take on bantamweight champ Lady Killer, played by real-life MMA fighter Valentina Shevchenko.
Even though the film has a 15 certificate, Halle let her teen daughter watch it to see the hard graft she had put in for the role.
Nahla is the daughter of her ex-boyfriend, Canadian fashion model Gabriel Aubry, 45. Halle, also has eight-year-old son Maceo, whose dad is her ex-husband, French actor Olivier Martinez, 56, who she divorced in 2015.
Halle said: “I asked Nahla, ‘Would you please come to my film? You may never see it on the big screen because it’s on Netflix. So I’d really love you to see what I did’.
“I said, ‘It’s not totally appropriate for you, you’re 13. But you’re my kid, so I really want you to see what I worked so hard on and why I missed so much time with you’.
“The irony is that she only ended up seeing those two love scenes because the colour was all wrong so the editor called time on the screening.”
Another unique parenting experience came when she homeschooled her two kids in their Malibu, California, beachfront home during lockdown in 2020.
Halle, who also has a pad in the Hollywood hills, said: “I became so involved with my children in a whole new way. I became a homeschool teacher and we had to find things to do within the house. Our creativity went to a higher level.
“We became closer as a family. My children found ways to start getting along because they had to actually talk to each other. They were friends.”
Halle has spent her 30-year career convincing people she is more than a pretty face.
Now dating musician Van Hunt, 51, she revealed: “The truth is I long for someone to come up and say, ‘You’re talented’, or ‘You’re a good mother’. But I always just get people commenting on my looks.
“I have tried to fight through that and prove myself. But at 55 I’m tired of trying to fight all the time.”
She won the Best Actress Oscar in 2002 for her role in hard-hitting drama Monster’s Ball, making her the first black woman ever to lift the gong. But after her major win she says “no scripts came in”.
Chatting with fellow actors Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes on their SmartLess Podcast, Halle said: “I thought, ‘This is the highest award of our industry, it’s going to garner me better opportunities’. But nothing changed.
“The script truck didn’t back up to my door. Because there was still no way for people of colour.
“So I feel like that award means different things for different people. If you ask Nicole Kidman, she might have a different reality on what that award meant for her.
“But it didn’t mean that for me. I didn’t get offered all these wonderful scripts with these great directors.”
But Halle proudly told how her milestone win had helped smash down barriers and build opportunities for the next generation of screen talent.
She said: “If you look at our evolution from 20 years ago to now, black women are everywhere.
“They’re in all kinds of roles. They’re taking roles for men and changing them into women and becoming more inclusive. I do think that moment inspired many people to think differently and to believe that anything was possible. So in that way, I feel like it mattered.
“It’s always really gratifying and satisfying. And it reminds me that I’m doing my part throughout history. We all just carry the ball as far as we can and hope the younger generation picks it up, and then go even farther. It’s what we wish for our children.
“We always want our children to be better, smarter, go farther than we could.”

Kourtney Kardashian has hit out at her own show, The Kardashians, criticising its editors over an episode early in the season.
You may think there’s nothing more superhero TV shows and movies can offer audiences, but you’d be wrong.
Much like her brother, Elon Musk’s sister has a bold business mindset, though her way of building wealth is a lot more risqué than cars and tech.

It's a constant gripe of girls who like girls that there is so little culture that explores, engages and takes seriously their sexuality. While much of Hollywood is off pretending that women only want to bang each other for the benefit of slavering men, the other prevalent lesbian storyline tends to involve one woman presenting the option of queer love to another who had never considered it before. Women are assumed to be straight until proven otherwise; proof which comes much to the surprise of the society around them, and often, the women themselves.
With the UK release of the hot and heavy Palme D'Or winner Blue is the Warmest Colour this Friday, we run down the top ten films featuring the lesbian feels.
As you might expect, Sweden has a ton of lesbian films (two of which, no lie, have English titles taken from Robyn songs). This suburban tale of teen frustration at small-town possibilities is Lukas Moodysson's ( Lilya 4-Ever) directorial debut . Expect "no one understands me" angst and suburban 90s tracksuits aplenty.
Kate Winslet's first major film and directed by Peter Jackson, Heavenly Creatures tells the story of two teenage girls in Christchurch, New Zealand who are obsessed with each other and the fantasy worlds they enter together. Another true story, the violent ending is a culmination of the underlying tension between the girls, a dizzying, hysterical friendship that lashes out against anything that threatens it.
The predecessor to Blue Is The Warmest Colour 's level of raunch, this Spanish sexfest portrays a one-night encounter between Natasha, who is engaged to be married to a man, and the brazenly seductive Alba. Proper sex scenes and a real tension between the two women are what makes this film stand out.
Set in a seminary in Israel, the plot follows an intelligent and headstrong girl as she works towards her dream of becoming a rabbi. Dealing with the whole "God hates fags" thing, The Secrets is about women making their own choices in a traditional and orthodox environment.
Two school teachers (played by Audrey Hepburn and Shirley Maclaine) are accused of being lovers by a student at their school, causing them to lose all their students overnight. The undercurrent of self-loathing and repression make this pretty bleak viewing, but it's worth it for the witch-hunting reaction of the parents, as well as the uber-dramatic facial close-ups of the accusing student, Mary.
"Here anything illegal becomes politically subversive," Atafeh, one of Circumstance 's main characters says. Though it's set in contemporary Tehran, it was filmed in Beirut, where the Lebanese government were sent a fake script in order to ensure it was filmed. However, the authorities still kept a close eye on the film, mirroring the action of the plot, which explores two middle-class girls' experiences in the illicit underground youth culture of Iran's capital.
Awkward French teenager Marie is obsessed with the local synchronised swimming team, and particularly its star swimmer, herself plagued by her own troublesome virginity, despite her slutty reputation. If you need to remember how much it sucks to be a teenager, watch this film.
