It’s turning into “The L Word” behind bars.
We’re talking about “Orange Is the New Black,” once the hottest show on TV. And that’s not because it threw a sex scene at you every three minutes, but because it was daring, original and introduced viewers to a clutch of actresses who we would have never seen on network television.
Now, it’s become a lesbian soap opera. Bo-ring.
First problem: Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon, as the show’s would-be star-crossed lovers Piper and Alex, have NO chemistry and can’t squeeze out an ounce of sexual tension between them. The only streetcar these two are riding is named perspire. This season, these poor actors have to get on the floor in the prison library, grunt and grind against each other, and say bad words that begin with the letter F and end with the letter K. Let your mind ponder that one, because the writers here have left nothing to the imagination.
“Orange” already had three gay characters on the show: Poussey (Samira Wiley), Nicky (Natasha Lyonne) and Big Boo (Lea DeLaria). And now they have Ruby Rose coming on as a character who will be in a romantic triangle with Schilling and Prepon. Has creator Jenji Kohan lost her nerve — after delivering two great seasons — by just making this into a gay soap? This is supposed to be a prison drama where the characters are all in jail because they committed crimes.
Last year’s arc with Red (Kate Mulgrew) and her old enemy Vee (Lorraine Toussaint) was masterfully done. Watching those two actresses go at each other was worth the price of a Netflix subscription. If all we have to look forward to now is flirting, crying and screwing, we’re going to get out of this jail on good behavior.
