Jennifer Grey stars in the new Amazon Studios show Red Oaks , a comedy series following the lives of those surrounding a the eponymous prestigious and exclusive 1980s country club, where young student David Myers ( Craig Roberts ) works. Grey plays David’s mother, Judy Myers, a recent divorcée who has begun to experiment with her sex life – with a “virgin” lesbian kiss.
Grey revealed that the season has so far been isolating, for both her and her character. “I felt very alone. I was away from my real family and I was feeling very out of the nest and I didn’t feel like I was part of everyone else’s scenes,” she revealed. “I had my own little story, I felt like I wanted to play and I wanted to I didn’t have any people to play with.”
That quickly changes when Judy is given a new love interest, played by Gage Golightly (Karen). “I got a girl to play with and that was fun, because instead of being kind of prurient—it wasn’t exploitative. It was a really nervous, almost sick-to-my-stomach kind of nervousness kiss,” she said. This is quite a jump for her character, whom prior to this experience has been married to David’s father, Sam Myers, played by Richard Kind . Grey said that the nervousness extended into how she felt during the scene. “And when I was doing it I actually felt a little—not sick to my stomach, but a little “ughh,” scared! And I enjoyed that, because you don’t everyday get to feel like a virgin at my age.” she joked, before quickly passing the question on to her nearby co-star, Paul Resier (Doug Getty).
The first season of Red Oaks is currently available for streaming on Amazon. The second season is already in the works for later this fall.
