A number of professional female athletes are proud members of the LGBTQ community. Whether these lesbian athletes are stars in the realms of soccer, basketball, or tennis, their personal stories and advocacy for gay rights make them inspirations for sports fans all over the world. Some notable openly gay female athletes have competed in the Olympics and other talented lesbian athletes are World Cup champions. A few of the most famous lesbian athletes were pioneers in the LGBTQ movement.
Who will you find on this list of the best lesbian athletes? Abby Wambach appears at the top. Wambach became a two-time Olympic gold medalist during her impressive soccer career. She has also appeared on the cover of ESPN Magazine . Tennis legend Martina Navratilova is also one of the most famous lesbian athletes of all time. Basketball star Sheryl Swoopes, who came out as gay in 2005, was the first player to be signed to the WNBA.
