What is the rate of violence and abuse in same-sex relationships? 44% of lesbian women have experienced rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner. 26% of gay men have faced similar intimate partner violence in their lifetime. 61% of bisexual women report experiencing rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner.
LGBT+ victims of sexual violence require a specialist understanding and response. The UK government needs to provide dedicated, long-term national funding for specialist 'by and for' services that includes specialist advocacy, therapeutic services and practical support.
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), also called domestic violence, involves a pattern of behaviors where one partner uses power and control over another. It can show up in many forms from physical, emotional, sexual, and financial, but also in ways that are specific to the lived experience of LGBTQIA+ people.
Findings from this study can serve to better inform helping professionals about considerations to keep in mind when working within lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, plus various additional sexual minorities' communities and survivors of female same-gender violence.
