Most of the horrific tales people read about rape involve a man attacking a woman – but that is certainly not the only kind of sexual assault.
Women have raped men, men have raped men, and some women have even raped other women. But because those types of assault or less common – or, perhaps, because some people simply can't wrap their heads around the logistics of those kinds of assault – victims often suffer in silence and find that their experiences are written off by others.
Such was the case for one anonymous woman who wrote an essay for xoJane, in which she described the time that she was raped by another woman at a party – and then had her account of the terrifying experience dismissed by family, friends, and even her therapist when she tried to talk about it. 
The unknown writer was attacked one night in December in 2013, when she was attending an all-female sleepover with six other women where everyone knew each other, or had shared friends in common.
So when a woman with whom she shared a mutual friend approached her, she felt no need to have her guard up. Even when that woman asked her about her love life, the writer felt comfortable, spilling that her marriage was 'on the rocks' and she hadn't had sex in a while. That's when things took a strange turn.

'She looked into my eyes and I thought I noticed a hint of longing in her eyes as she said, "But, you're so sexy. You deserve to have sex,"' the writer recounted.
Though she assumed that the other woman was just trying to comfort her, the intimate moment still made her uncomfortable. She decided not to drink any more, since she felt like she needed to 'stay alert'.
Then, the woman who had been talking to her said she needed help, and asked the writer to come to the bathroom. Thinking that the woman had had a bit too much to drink, she followed.
But when the writer walked into the bathroom, the woman locked the door and shoved the writer against the sink.
'She turned her glassy eyes toward mine and breathed, "You're so sexy," pinning me against the sink as she violently pulled off my panties,' she wrote. 'I started to scream but she covered my mouth with her hand and I started to suffocate.'
If she tried to scream, the woman pressed her hand harder over her mouth and nose and made it more difficult for her to breathe. She was stuck.

Luckily, the other party guests were looking for them, and her attacker got nervous as they approached the bathroom. She took her hand off the writer's mouth, pulled up her underwear, and walked out.
After the attack, the writer was completely shocked. She quickly told a friend what had happened, and the friend - who believed her but was too drunk to offer any real support - relayed the situation to the hostess. 
By now, her attacker was crying and begging to explain. The hostess told the writer that she could sleep in her bed that night so the other woman 'wouldn't get to her' - but her attacker wasn't shunned by the group or even asked to leave.
'Sometimes these kinds of misunderstandings happen at parties,' the hostess said. 'Girl drama!"
The writer, still in shock, didn't think to leave herself – and the next day, her attacker was gone and everyone else acted like nothing had even happened.
Still reeling, the writer went home and found several messages on Facebook from her rapist, who tried to explain herself and even asked if they could 'hook up' again.
But her attacker wasn't the only person who diminished what had happened. 
'No one ever spoke of it to me again, which made me incredibly enraged,' the victim wrote. In fact, she said, one of the guests pretended to not even know who she was when they ran into each other a while later.
However, while they were all able to act like they had forgotten, the writer herself wasn't so lucky. She said that the ordeal had a 'profound affect' on her mental health and sex life.
She and her then-husband – who she already had a declining relationship with – split soon after. And even when she began dating again, her sex life suffered.

She also worked out like crazy, spending over 20 hours a week in the gym and adding 20 pounds of muscle because she wanted to feel strong enough to prevent another attack.
Many of her relationships were impacted as well, since she felt like no one took her experience as seriously as they should have - including her own therapist. In her essay, she explained that people 'couldn't seem to grasp the terrible brutality of the rape' because it was committed by a woman. Even a police officer acquaintance downplayed the incident, advising her not to bother filing a report.
The writer has found that some people have trouble understanding how two women can even be considered to have had sex, much less sexually assault one another. Part of the problem, she explained, is also that so many people believe that women are 'inherently nonviolent'.
'Woman-on-woman sexual assault is rarely discussed and victims of it are often dismissed as liars or as parties to lesbian experimentation gone wrong, as happened in my case,' she said. 'I have been sexually assaulted by both a man and a woman, and my experiences were equally terrifying, yet I received much less support after a woman assaulted me. No one could even register my experience as important, let alone react.'
