Lesbian filmmaker Alice Wu’s Netflix movie The Half of It —about an introverted, bookish Chinese-American teen, Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), who helps a jock (Daniel Diemer) woo a girl (Alexxis Lemire) whom she also falls in love with—premieres May 1, kicking off a fantastic month for queer Asian representation on the screen (at home, of course).
Premiering May 11, the five-part PBS series Asian Americans boasts LGBTQ intersectionality with segments featuring activist and journalist Helen Zia , whose same-sex marriage was one of California’s first, and Margaret Cho. May 7 also sees Criterion Channel’s mini-retrospective of queer Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang’s work.
Let’s not forget the diverse slate of queer Asian and Asian-American movies streaming right now, beginning with these 10 gems.
Late queer Hong Kong icon Leslie Cheung (there’s a cafe in Chengdu dedicated to him!) and Tony Leung star as a dysfunctional gay couple in Argentina in director Wong Kar-Wai’s stunningly beautiful (and sometimes drama-filled) cinematic poem. Once you've seen Happy Together , you’ll never forget it. (Streaming on Criterion Channel )
Asian-American director Quentin Lee follows up his 15-year anniversary edition of Ethan Mao with this remastered 18th anniversary edition of 2002’s Drift , a Sliding Doors -style tale of an Los Angeles couple (R.T. Lee and Greyson Dane) and the three possible directions their lives could take when one falls for a college student (Jonathan Roessler). (Streaming on Amazon )
One of only a few Indonesian films boasting positive LGBTQ representation, this Sex and The City -esque dramedy about a clique of well-heeled Jakartans includes a sweet, blossoming romance between an architect (Tora Sudiro) just coming to grips with his sexuality and a movie producer (Surya Saputra). Bonus: You can binge-watch it on Netflix with its sequel, Arisan 2 . (Streaming on Netflix )
Alice Wu’s GLAAD Award-nominated directorial debut follows a closeted Asian-American surgeon (Michelle Krusiec), whose relationship with a ballerina (Lynn Chen) is complicated when her widowed, disapproving mother (Joan Chen) shows up, pregnant, with her own secret. Fun fact: Will Smith was a producer! (Streaming on Amazon )
Taiwan-based queer director Tsai Ming-Liang returned to his home country of Malaysia for this atmospheric, tender work starring his muse Lee Kang-sheng as the victim of a beating who’s nursed back to health by an immigrant worker (Norman Atun). Kang-sheng also stars in the 1997 film The River as a teen whose closeted queerness manifests as an agonizing neck pain while his father frequents gay saunas on the DL. It's as audacious as it sounds. (Streaming on Criterion Channel )
“Toms,” short for masculine-appearing tomboy lesbians, are a cultural phenomenon in Thailand (and much of Asia). When femme college student Pie (Sucharat Manaying) meets her Tom roomie Kim (Suppanad Jittaleela), it ain’t long before “no” becomes “yes.” Binge it with fellow romantic dramedy sequels Yes or No 2 and Yes or No 2.5 . (Streaming on Netflix )
Writer-director Sudhanshu Saria’s bittersweet gay romantic drama, shot in secrecy while homosexuality was still illegal in India, involves a road trip for reunited childhood friends Jai (Shiv Pandit) and Sahil (Dhruv Ganesh). While on their journey, mutual attraction bubbles to the surface and causes drama—especially when Sahil’s boyfriend, Alex (Siddharth Menon), enters the picture. (Streaming on Netflix )
Although South Korea’s best LGBTQ titles are sadly absent from mainstream U.S. streaming services (you can, however, see the moving, way-queer historical drama The King And The Clown for free here ), give this tale of the relationship between two theater actors (Park Sung-woong and Oh Seung-hoon), and how their careers are threatened when one decides to make it public, a watch. (Streaming on Amazon )
Fresh off a painful breakup, Toey (Tonawanik Adisorn) leaves Thailand to stay in the quiet, nature-filled Japanese town of Higashikawa to nurse his wounds and avoid any other Thai people. However, coincidence leads to a new neighbor from Thailand, Oat (Maroukasonti Kritsana), seeking a last bit of freedom before marrying a woman back home. The continuation of their story, Present Still Perfect , is being released this year. (Streaming on Amazon )
Ek Ladki ko Dekha Toh aisa Laga (2019)
This jubilant Bollywood rom-com includes India superstar Anil Kapoor ( Slumdog Millionaire , M:I Ghost Protocol ) and follows a closeted Punjabi lesbian, Sweety (Anil’s daughter, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja), who agrees to marry playwright Sahil (Rajkummar Rao) to appease her family despite being in love with another woman (Regina Cassandra). The title translates to "How I Felt When I Saw That Girl." (Streaming on Netflix )

When thinking of a ‘best’ list of LGBT related films, the criteria is so varied that it’s very hard to pick just a small amount. Are we comparing them in terms of narrative? Or is it strong and unique characters? Is it in terms of innovation of the genre, and can we even call lesbian or LGBT films a genre in general, considering they can vary from comedies, to dramas, to murder stories?
Of course, one must consider all these things at once because, after all, films are complex and multi-sided. Although many films were made in earlier cinema about lesbians – whether openly or in more subtle forms – it is the New Queer Cinema that really transformed the definition of sexuality and the potential of what non-heterosexual films can be as well as the way LGBT characters can be presented. Although the movement never became mainstream, it has subtly infiltrated both indie and Hollywood cinema in a way that it’s traces are still seen today.
Without further ado, although a list of great films should never be limited to such a small number as 10, these titles definitely stand as strong representations of lesbian films.
10. The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook, 2016)
The Handmaiden is a brilliant film in all its aspects, with a plot that doesn’t stop to shock and surprise at every turn. The film follows a con-man, Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) who is on a mission to seduce and steal the inheritance of a rich Japanese woman Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee).
To carry out his plan he hires the help of a professional thief, Sook-Hee (Kim Tae-ri) to act as her handmaiden. However, the women are smarter than Fujiwara thought and what follows is an endless power swap of the characters, in the process of which Sook-Hee and Lady Hideko fall in love.
9. The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1972)
Although this is not the film most associated with Fassbinder, it is a real gem and one of his greatest works. The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant was adapted by him from his own play of the same name, giving it a great cinematographic spin and illuminating it with rich colours suitable to a film about a fashion designer. The story is both humorous and tragic, showing the difficulties of finding true love when you’re rich and famous – a story quite personal to Fassbinder himself.
Set in a luscious and artistic apartment of Petra Von Kant (Margit Cartensen), a powerful woman who is arrogant and self-righteous, whose life changes for the better or worse when, infatuated with a young model Karin (Hanna Schygulla), she invites her to move in with her, causing a series of drama.
8. My Summer of Love (Pawel Pawlikowski, 2004)
The summer is a strange romantic time for youth. A period where you have a lot of time to yourself, and longing for something exciting to happen that will help you feel more alive.
Set in such a period of time, My Summer of Love explores a unique relationship between two young girls that could not have less in common. Tamsin (Emily Blunt), coming from an upper-class background and a spoiled attitude and Mona (Natalie Press) a lower-class girl hiding her brightness behind a hard-faced mask.
However, whether it is the summer, or the bonding over their familial problems, the girls immediately become close and find themselves crossing over the strict friendship barrier.
Like many LGBT films, Pariah is a film of self-discovery, and one that is very much personal to the director herself. The film follows Alike (Adepero Oduye) in a coming of age story that creates a lot of sympathy and identification with the young teenager.
One can’t help but root for her as she is forced to hide her unfemininity in front of her parents, changing clothes before seeing them as a reassurance of her normality. At the same time we can experience the joy of her first love and the transformation in makes in her and for her relationship with herself as she finally finds someone who understands her.
The film is filmed with beautiful cinematography from Bradford Young that reflects Alike’s emotions through the saturated colours at a night club scene and green murky tones of desperation as she finds out the price of being herself.
6. Desert Hearts (Donna Deitch, 1986)
Desert Hearts is a ground breaking film in that, for the first time, a man was not in any way involved in the romance between two women.
Armed with powerful and complex characters, Desert Hearts follows Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) in an attempt to start fresh after her divorce, as she learns to rediscover who she is. The spark she needed appears in the form of Cay (Patricia Charbonneau), a bright and energetic sculptor who has long learnt to forget about society’s permission when it comes to living her life as she wants. She is fearless and not afraid to be challenging, something that immediately draws Vivian. The films western rural landscapes serve as a backdrop for the inspiring affair.

Turn on one of these LGBTQ+ flicks to see yourself onscreen.
Even though the LGBTQ+ population is on the rise in the United States, lesbian and gay relationships are still underrepresented in much of popular media. But the good news is, a more diverse array of human experiences is appearing on screen just about every year. According to the 2020 GLAAD media report , of the 118 films released from the major studios in 2019, 22 included LGBTQ+ characters. That's the highest percentage of inclusive films in the report's history. And that representation really makes a difference. Media that shows LGBTQ+ people normalizes love and relationships between two people of the same gender, educates viewers on the long and difficult journey we're still taking toward equal rights and reinforces the fact that that gay, lesbian and LGBTQ+ people are just that, people who deserve to live loud and proud.
For newly out or young viewers, that validation is especially important as it can make them feel seen and heard in their experiences. That's a powerful thing, especially for those who don't otherwise have a safe place to be who they are. No matter your favorite genre, one of these movies focused on lesbian characters will be the perfect choice for your viewing pleasure. Be warned, though: some of them are a little hot and heavy. We've made a note of that where applicable, so you can save them for date night. Whether you want to help your LGBTQ+ teenager feel accepted or need a good film to watch with your partner, you'll find something to love on this list.
A wealthy woman and a department store clerk begin an illicit affair in this must-watch LGBTQ+ film set in the 1950s. Adapted from the cult classic The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, it depicts how unexpected romance can change your life.
Fans of comedian Tig Notaro will love this tear-jerking documentary about life after a devastating cancer diagnosis. If you also cried your way through her stand-up set where she announced it, show this to a friend.
Many of us first watched this sleeper hit when we were teens ourselves, and it's well worth revisiting. It's poignant, hilarious and endlessly quotable.
Charlotte is a troubled musical prodigy and Elizabeth is a new star student. Before long, they find themselves starting down a dangerous path with sinister results. This LGBTQ+ thriller will send shivers down your spine.
High schooler Adele has barely begun exploring her own identity when she meets blue-haired, free-spirited Emma. Adele's friends don't accept her as she really is, so she grows even closer to Emma. As you may be able to tell from the poster, this one's best for adult audiences.
A comedic spoof on the Charlie Angels franchise, D.E.B.S. centers around the unlikely love story between the leader of an elite group of teen spies and a supervillain. You don't have to be too familiar with the original story to love this fun, flirty romp.
Like so many besties, Naomi and Ely have a firmly established "no kiss list" to protect them from getting romantically entangled. But in a surprising twist, they both come down with the hots for the same dude, even though Ely's a lesbian. Turn rom-com stereotypes upside down with this quirky, fun film.
Starring Ali Shawkat of Arrested Development , this intimate drama redefines what love between two women can look like. After getting fed up with the lies and deception their previous relationships have involved, two women spend 24 hours with each other to see if they can do any better.
Tear your eyes away from the poster image for a second, because the story is just as enticing. It follows the love story of Tala, a London-based Palestinian woman who's planning her wedding when she meets and falls for Leyla, a British Indian woman.
Simone's trying to work up the bravery to come out as a lesbian to her conservative Jewish family when she develops a crush on a dashing male chef. This snort-worthy comedy covers the spectrum of romantic attraction, with lots of heartfelt and funny moments along the way.
Comic book artists Holden and Banky have been buds for more than 20 years, but when they meet Alyssa, it could throw a wrench in their friendship. Holden falls hard, but there's just one problem: Alyssa doesn't date men. This fun comedy also has an excellent throwback soundtrack.
From the minds that brought you There's Something About Mary comes this cringeworthy holiday comedy. A woman brings her girlfriend home for Thanksgiving, intending to come out to the whole clan. But then her male roommate shows up and, well, let's just say it doesn't go as planned.
In 1901, Elisa Sanchez Loriga assumed a male identity to marry her lover, Marcela Gracia Ibeas. This classic movie is based on that riveting story, with beautiful scenery to boot. If you're a fan of foreign films and love stories, this one's perfect for date night
After Nina Shah's father dies, she has to move back to Glasgow to help keep her family's restaurant afloat. That's where she meets Lisa, who owns half. Romance (and lots of tasty-looking food) follows. Grab a snack before pressing play.
Most buddy comedies focus on two straight dudes, so check out this female-fronted flick for a change of pace. Sasha (who's a lesbian) and Paige (who's straight) are best friends, and always put their relationship first. But then Paige meets a new guy that threatens their unbreakable bond.
Buckle in for a dark crime thriller by The Wachowskis that follows Corky, a lesbian ex-con-turned plumber who concocts a plot with Violet to steal millions and pin it on Violet's boyfriend. If you're not in the mood for romance but still want an LGBTQ+ film, try this one.
If you're the type to watch holiday movies year-round (guilty as charged), this star-studded Christmas film works anytime. Our protagonist plans to propose to her girlfriend at Christmas when they spend the holidays with her family, but on their way there, she finds out she isn't out to them. It's heartwarming, funny and the outfits are on point.
After a long estrangement due to her sexual transgressions, Ronit returns home to her super-conservative, Orthodox Jewish community in London and rediscovers a passion for her childhood friend, Esti. It's a stirring exploration of faith, community and love.
