17 Celebrity Splits We Didn't See Coming
Couples we thought would stand the test of time.
UPDATED ON : JUNE 17, 2021 / 08:28 AM
Nobody expects celebrity relationships to last forever, but some stars truly blindsided us with their splits. From Gary Owen and Kenya Duke to J. Lo and A-Rod, celebs are proving that sometimes love just doesn’t last forever. Gary Owen and Kenya Duke split in March after 18 years of marriage. According to TMZ, Duke filed divorce documents on Friday (March 19) in Los Angeles County Supreme Court. There’s no clear indication of why the 46-year-old filed for divorce from Owen, 46. The couple has three adult children.

Now, Duke is asking her soon-to-be ex -husband to pay $44,000 in spousal support.

Queen of Hip Hop Soul Mary J. Blige filed for divorce from her husband of 12 years, Kendu Isaacs in June 2016. Since the initial announcement, they both have remained mum on the details, but the singer recently revealed that her husband started disrespecting her, tried changing her and even added claims of infidelity.

After two years of marriage and 12 years together, movie stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie divorced in 2016, with the Mr. & Mrs. Smith actress citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. They never expounded on the detailed reasons for their divorce.

The former beauty queen and retired LA Laker star quietly split in 2004 after living on opposite coasts for 18 months. Fox officially filed for divorce in August 2004, however, the two remain friends.

After nearly five years of marriage, Shaq filed for divorce from his wife, Shaunie, in September 2007. Cited as "irretrievably broken," the marriage seemed to be on the rocks for a while, but the couple didn't show any signs of difficulty. The divorce was one of the most expensive divorces in history at the time, with the former NBA star paying his now ex-wife at least $20,000 per month in alimony and temporary child support. Shaunie would go on to executive produce the successful reality show Basketball Wives.

While they have both moved on, Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian's marriage and divorce in 2011 created a media firestorm. Just 72 days after they said, "I Do," in a lavish, $10 million Montecito wedding, the first couple of reality TV called it quits. Kardashian claims her "intuition" guided the decision to divorce, while insiders say it was the NBA player's "lack of ambition." Kardashian, of course, married Kanye West. However, they split in February of 2021.

The Oscar-winning actress and male model split in 2010 after four years together and tried to keep things civil as they worked out a custody arrangement for their daughter, Nahla. Despite their public break-up, all appears well between the two and they are successfully co-parenting.
Gregg and NeNe's relationship was the most grounded thing about the circus that is Real Housewives of Atlanta, so when they announced their split in 2010, fans were genuinely shocked. But these lovebirds couldn't stay apart for long. The couple announced plans to remarry in January, 2013, and tied the knot — again.
