《Never the Sinner》是剧作家，编剧，电影制片人和电视制片人John David Logan（1961年9月24日，天秤座）的第一部剧作。他之后的作品包括《Gladiator》、《Star Trek: Nemesis》、《Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas》、《The Last Samurai》、《The Aviator》、《Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street》、《Rango》、《Coriolanus》、《Hugo》、《Skyfall》以及《Genius》。
1983年从Northwestern University毕业的他，1985年就于Stormfield Theatre推出了本剧，在剧本序言中，他写道：
To say that Leopold and Loeb were 'monsters' is too easy. To say that they were 'evil' is too facile. I find Darrow's tact more relevant. Leopold and Loeb were human beings. Just like the rest of us. THey were tormented. They were brutal. They lacked any true moral, ethical compass. They could not find their way in our sunlit world, so they embraced the darkness. In that darkness, they had only each other.
这部作品更侧重法庭辩论的部分，其中Darrow的台词也大多取自量刑听证会的法庭记录，本作的剧名也来自Darrow的结案陈词：
I can see sin in all the world. And I may well hate that sin, but never the sinner.
和《Rope》一样，《Never the Sinner》也屡次被重新搬上舞台，大致能找到的资料有1998年、2001年、2006年新加坡版、2007年Adrienne Theater版、2009年、2011年、2015年以及最近2017年版本的。此外还有2011年Western Michigan University的校园版和韩文版等等。
全剧基本人物不多，Darrow、Nathan、Richard、Crowe、Reporter 1、Reporter 2和Reporter 3，三名 Reporter还要负责赶一下其他角色。
虽然John David Logan将之定义为两人之间的“love story”，他却显然更想要以庭上控辩双方的辩论为剧情张力的着眼点，Darrow的结案陈词作为Top100 American Speeches中排名23位的高度，超过了Ronald Wilson Reagan的《A Time of Choosing》、Eugene Victor Debs在1918年的《Statement to the Court》，现在也作为法律系学生的常规阅读材料被一代代传递着。
刻意削弱两人之间立下Contrat的情节但又不忘重申两人之间感情的纠葛，John David Logan笔下，面对冰冷的法律制裁，Darrow向庭上、向在座听众、向世界提出“A Plea for Mercy”。
当时没有留存音像资料，我们现在能够看到的，只有当年他陈情的全文，那诗歌般的低语在法庭内回响，要重现，唯有去到《Never the Sinner》的现场。舞台剧的优点在于他的生命力，每一场都是不同的，每一场都有每一场的感动。
