Leila is a film that shows the pitfalls of a marriage that's decimated by mental illness. It could be funny in a dark comedy kinda of way if marriages didn't crash and burn like this in reality. Chloë Annett (Leila) was a great choice in casting for this film because not only did she play the part really well but she also has the look to play the part really well. Leila put on a frighteningly potent display of gaslighting her husband. Her effectiveness was in part due to her attractiveness. For many, it's easier to question one's own sanity/logic/resolve if the person pulling the strings is very attractive. "Never trust a woman that's fine and she knows she's fine." - 50 Cent Leila's husband, Paul (Lee Boardman) was really losing it in the early parts of the film to the extent that it's easy for the audience to believe he's really going nuts. But there was one tip off that clued me in to the real skinny...the spiders. The constant cut to spiders at various times in the film leaving me with the impression that he was caught in the web. It was great to see Paul finally tell Leila to leave the house. He wasn't fully aware of what his wife was doing but he was aware enough to ask her to leave and put distance between them even if only aware on an instinctive level. Unfortunately, the would affair ends tragically but not without a undercurrent of hot passion. See, no one can love or hate with more passion than the insane. Watching Leila, I have no doubt what-so-ever that Leila loved her husband (and her kids), very deeply. But it's the fact that she did love him that made destroying him that much sweeter. It's the twisted sense of accomplishment to break someone who is truly worthy of being broken. Someone that loves her as her husband, partner, father of her children. To see how much Paul can take before he breaks. The faux sex scenes illustrate this. Leila would initiate and just when Paul would start to get into it, Leila would immediately turn off and walk away. The way she totally disregarded Paul in these instances going from hot to cold as if a light switch was flipped could be viewed as highly erotic in a BDSM themed relationship. Causing the victim to want the tormentor even more. But be it gaslighting or BDSM, it's burning the candle from both ends, so today's hot passion via manipulation however brief, is tomorrow's tragic ending and you can take that to bank. Paul did the right thing in asking Leila to leave the house. But once that happened, Leila lost her focus and started to truly unravel because by asking her to leave and ensuring that she left, Paul took power away from Leila which ultimately led to the karma inspired finale. "People can only do to you what you allow them to do. By marrying a psycho, you've given them all the power they'll ever need."

I liked this film because it depicted, so to be understood the sometimes horrific aspects of a marriage which is coming apart. Once I had become aware of the First spider and then, there was a second one, I became totally aware of whom, Leila was. There are spiders which eat their mates and even their young. Leila's severe mental disturbance compelled to act and react like one of these spiders. aside from what I've written above, I'd like to say, that while grieving for my father, these films and documentaries have helped me deal with the pain. And, for that, Amazon, I am grateful!!

Awesome psychological/suspense/horror. Perfect exploration of the abusive dynamic known as 'gaslighting' which I think means the person who wrote this film must have had personal experience growing up with a dysfunctional family where truth is majorly distorted and you get punished for telling the truth. The father's acting was excellent, and i really intimately know what it's like in a family with these dynamics and the father has an accurate complimentary personality type to the mother for this real-life dynamic. i really felt this. had me on the edge of my seat.

Beautifully and painfully acted. This movie will mean more to anyone who has experienced a relationship with a malignant narcissist. The end was, however, satisfying. My heart broke for Paul but at the same time he handles his situation in a healthy way. Many could not and do not. The pace is realistic, day after day. The narrative mimicry of a normal life is what makes it more chilling as the story develops. Kids are excellent. One really believes that this is a family which makes it infuriating and disturbing to watch. If you are looking for some absurd "Lifetime"-type movie with exaggerated contrived ups and downs this is not a movie for you. The natural realism is what makes it so effective. I highly recommend it.

Really good movie. Perfect example of "gaslighting" at it's best. Watch this movie with a true Narcissist and pay attention to the smirk on their face as they admire Leila's work.

Classic case of gas-lighting. At first you think it is the husband, but then the gas-lighting from the wife becomes clear. Is mental illness misdiagnosed and mistreated everywhere?

Mixed emotions about this one. I'd suggest fast-forwarding for about 30 minutes with the knowledge that a jealous husband suspects his wife of cheating and she accuses him of hiding her phone and camera. That's really all you need to know, since nothing actually happens. Over one-third in, the wife's persona starts to crack, and things get interesting for the remainder. Not much explanation in the way of a satisfying ending, other than crazy people do crazy things. (Which is why crazy people make boring antagonists. They do it...just because). That said, if you can stomach the glacial beginning, there's some great acting, tension and suspense.
