Lego, a Danish toy company, has launched a rival video game to Minecraft.

Lego Worlds is now available for PS11.99 via Steam gaming platform. Its final release is expected in 2016, with classic and modern playsets along with popular mini-figures.

In response to player feedback, new features will be added.

Lego already sells Minecraft kits so that gamers can actually build their virtual creations. Lego Worlds will also allow fans to build their virtual creations in reverse.

Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games, which will release Lego Worlds, said it "embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that consumers have enjoyed for decades, on a digital platform that delivers an entirely new type of experience with the beloved bricks".

He said, "From the brick-by–brick editor, to discovering an extensive range of items characters and creatures to populate you worlds - there are endless creative possibilities."

Favourite toys

Daniel Goldberg has written a book about Minecraft's growth. He said he was "surprised that it has taken so long".

"Minecraft does exactly what Lego should do 10 years ago," he stated.

"I'm sure it'll be a huge success"

Markus Persson (the Swedish video games developer who created Minecraft) has never hidden his enthusiasm for Lego. The admiration seems to be mutual.

David Gram, Lego's Marketing Director, stated last year that "Minecraft was digital Lego." We only wish we had invented it."

Mr Goldberg believes that Mr Persson will be "flattered," according to the game.

He stated that Lego was his favourite toy when he was a child and was the inspiration for Minecraft. "It is nice to see things coming full-circle," he said.

"I don't believe that there will ever be animosity." minecraft Game developers generally feel honoured when someone copies an already existing game.

Lego is not just for children, it's also for hardcore adult enthusiasts.

Microsoft bought Minecraft last ye and it has managed to appeal to both children as well as adults.

Mr Goldberg stated that "the audience for Minecraft has proven to be quite large, so I'm certain there will be space for both games."
