Azula’s fate is never addressed in Legend of Korra, but the Fire Nation princess may have secretly appeared to help Korra at one of her worst moments.

Azula’s story ended on a tragic note in Avatar: The Last Airbender, but she may have a brighter future in Legend of Korra according to one theory. The fate of the Fire Nation princess is never directly mentioned in Legend of Korra, which did not deal heavily with tying up the original series’ loose ends. However, Azula could have secretly appeared in the show to help Korra at one of her worst moments.
Following her defeat at Katara’s hands in the finale of Avatar, Azula appeared in the comics more than once, giving fans a glimpse of what happened to the Azula after the original show ended. In The Search, she had been committed to an asylum, but Fire Lord Zuko brought her back to the palace to find out their mother’s whereabouts from Ozai, who would only reveal the information to Azula. She went on a journey to find their mother with Team Avatar, but after a violent breakdown, she escaped them and ran away. She returned in Smoke and Shadow, enacting a failed plan to depose Zuko from the throne, but she disappeared again after that. The latest addition to her story is still not long after the end of Avatar, leaving decades of her life story a mystery before the time of Legend of Korra.
Although Avatar’s upcoming movies and shows could answer questions about Azula’s fate, a fan theory suggests Legend of Korra already revealed her future. When Korra was attacked by a dark spirit, she washed up on Bhanti Island in the Fire Nation, where she was taken to a firebender shaman. The shaman submerged Korra in spirit water to reconnect with her past lives, healing her from the attack. Fans noted the shaman bore a similarity to Azula, and speculated that the ill-fated princess may have found a better path for her firebending skills in the many years after her conflicts with Zuko and Team Avatar.
The shaman is a firebender roughly the same age as Fire Lord Zuko, and wears her hair in a similar style to Azula, making the connection possible. The shaman was also living in a relatively remote area, which would make sense for a fallen princess trying to live out her days without being reminded of Azula's past as Zuko’s nemesis. The shaman had been raising sky bison for half a century, a point on the timeline about twenty years past Azula’s last known whereabouts. Azula could have had a change of heart later in her life and rededicated her firebending talents to healing and spiritual energy, similar to the waterbender healing she had a chance to witness or learn about from Katara. There is no canonical indication that the shaman was meant to be Azula, especially as the shaman was originally written as a blind woman, but the show also does not rule out the theory.
Becoming a shaman on a remote island seems like an unlikely future for the ruthless and ambitious princess who spent her youth trying to take the throne, but much could happen in the decades since Aang’s story ended to redeem Azula and change her fate. The show’s writers had considered giving Azula a redemption arc of her own, but the idea never materialized, leaving her future in the story uncertain. Legend of Korra did not give Azula a concrete ending, but it left room for fans to hope that she eventually found peace after the conflicts of her early life.
