SSG Landers, which has been looking for a new head coach after the dismissal of Kim Won-hyung, will hand over the reins to Lee Sung-yong.
SSG announced on July 17, "We have appointed former KT Wiz head coach Lee Sung-yong as our ninth head coach. The contract size is a total of 900 million won, including a down payment of 300 million won and an annual salary of 300 million won for two years."
SSG replaced Kim Won-hyung, who had been in charge of the team for three seasons, on March 31. Kim's departure came as a shock as the team had won the wire-to-wire championship last year and had consistently performed well this year, finishing third in the regular season.
Since then, Park Chan-ho, Choo Shin-soo, and Lee Ho-joon (coach of the LG Twins) were heavily rumored to be SSG's next head coach, but SSG's final choice was Lee Sung-yong.
The club said, "We have begun the process of appointing a new head coach with the goal of revolutionizing our operating paradigm for sustainable development. We selected new candidates who can actively execute communicative leadership and team remodeling." "We set evaluation criteria by extracting essential competencies and virtues in various fields, and after in-depth interviews, we selected Lee Sung-yong."
After graduating from Kyung Hee University, Lee joined the Pacific Dolphins in 1994 with the first overall pick of the second round. During his career, he played 18 seasons and 2001 games for the Hyundai Unicorns and Heroes. He won four Korean Series titles.
Since retiring, he has held a number of key positions on the field and in the front office, including commentator, batting coach, head coach, and director of player development.
SSG described him as "someone who can maximize the potential of the coaching staff and individual players based on open communication and mutual respect.
Lee said, "I am sincerely grateful to the club for this opportunity. I will fulfill my responsibilities as I am given a huge task of performance and development," said Lee.
Lee will begin his official schedule at SSG with an inauguration ceremony in Songdo, Incheon, on May 21. 19가이드03
