is the study of the organization of language into stylistic devices, which are used to convey a particular kind of meaning. Stylistic syntax is a sub-field of expressive syntax. Stylistics is essentially the study of how people use language and how they make sense of it. It is concerned with the ways in which people express their thoughts and feelings. In this class, we will look at three different types of stylistic means: syntactic, semantic, and lexical.

or Syntactic Style, is a special kind of grammar that uses more than one lexical means (see §4.5) to construct sentences. Stylistic devices are a subset of syntactic means. They are grammatical means that are not lexicalized in their native language, but are used instead as syntactic devices. For example, in English, the word "all" is used as a sentence-initial word modifier and as a subject complementizer. These two uses are syntactic uses of the word.
The syntactic structure of a sentence is determined by the relations between the constituent parts. These relations are the grammatical relations that give a sentence its grammatical form. Grammarists divide these relations into three major categories: the syntactic, the semantic, and the pragmatic. The syntactic relations of a syntactically correct sentence are determined by its constituent parts, which are called syntactic constituents.
The term “syntactic expressive means” was introduced by A. W. Ward in his classic paper on the “Syntactic Expression of Style” (1949). He refers to the expressive use of syntax as “the use of syntactic expressions for the purpose of expression”. He distinguishes three kinds of expressive syntax:
1) “formal” syntax which is used to express the meaning, not to give the reader a sense of what is being said;

Lecture 7 Syntactic Expressives and Stylistic Means There are many different ways to express the same idea in a sentence.
In this lecture we will focus on the use of syntactic expressions.
Syntactic Expressions are used to connect words and phrases in the sentence, to show the relationships between them, or to make the sentence more readable.
