When I first started out in the kink community, I kept looking for other leather dykes like me, and was hard pressed to find them. I did eventually find others like me, once I found the leather community, which was a great relief! However, even now, I wonder, where are all the leather dykes hiding? It’s true there are a lot of us, and we are definitely not short by a long shot, but in looking at our numbers after spending just over a year in the Bay Area, where you would expect to find leather dykes out in droves, I wonder if there may be more of us NOT out and about in the kink/leather community than are.
I know there are a number of factors affect why a group of individuals may or may not be participating in their communities, either locally or nationally. As women, we still have to work harder at our careers than men, do the lion’s share of child rearing, be primary caretakers of family, the sole bread winners, and juggle the finances. Finding extra time, money, and energy to participate in our chosen communities can be difficult at best. I raised 3 children of my own and I know that struggle all too well.
At one point in my journey into kink and leather, I read a book called Radical Acceptance Embracing your life with the heart of a Buddha by Tara Brach, while also beginning my study of Buddhism in earnest. The concepts of awareness and intention were not new to me, but I had never really thought about them as a practice, or something I was even capable of on a level that could have real benefit to me personally. After I read the book, I started to think about what radical acceptance might look like in my daily thoughts and my actions with myself and others.
What I discovered was I was beginning to accept myself on a deeper level, with no excuses or justifications for my wants, needs, and desires. I was able to move past a mother’s guilt, and find ways to feed my heart and soul outside of my everyday duties and responsibilities. I accepted that I had needs and wants that had nothing to do with social or familial expectations, and it felt wonderful! My viewpoint on other people began to change too. I was no longer hearing the harsh judgmental tape playing in my head that we all hear from time to time, but instead I was hearing and seeing with compassion like never done before.
Soon I started setting and keeping my own boundaries around sex, play, and community, and respecting even more others right to do the same, and asked how I could help them in their journey as well. I am by no means perfect and in truth, I still have work to do in this area, but I”m encouraged by seeing how far I’ve come. It turns out that beliefs and ideas can evolve and change over time.
What I also found was a wonderful network of spiritual leather dykes and queers who may not always participate in the everyday events and the kink/leather community at large, but who are definitely active in kink and leather. One of the places I’ve found these wonderful people was at Southwest Leather Conference in Phoenix. I didn’t quite expect to expierience such a deeply impactful and sacred space or feel the things in such a core way. Most of the events I attend do not have a spiritual element to them, and definitely not in this quantity. I can tell you I walked away from that event with a full heart and spirit, and new insight into how my spirituality connects with my kink and leather.
In recent years, my play and sex has gone from long journeys in the dungeon with all the tools, to long hedonistic nights and days in bed reveling in all the pleasures at once. Total freedom to let everything go except that one moment in time. Truthfully it is a spiritual journey that I seek these days, one of awareness, transparency, honesty, and no shame. I find it in these energetic exchanges with other queers, who get me, have the same politics I do, and know what hot leather sex is about.
So it’s not that leatherdykes are not out there, living and loving in the same ways as a lot of us, it’s that self care sometimes looks like spending that thousand dollars on a mini vacation with a lover, instead of attending a conference or buying a custom pair of new boots.
I encourage everyone to engage in active self care and love on a regular basis as part of your spiritual practice, or just in the name of sanity. It’s a beautiful thing.
