Learning languages can slow down brain aging, scientists say
Scientists have concluded that people who speak more than one language have a more "youthful" brain. The effect of "rejuvenation" increases with an increase in the number of languages studied and an earlier start of their development. For those who speak two languages, the average brain looks about 6 years younger, for three — by 7 years, and for four — by 13 years. These are the conclusions reached by the authors of a study by the Federation of European Neuroscientific Societies, writes The Guardian.
In the study, scientists from Spain, Chile, Argentina and Ireland studied the inhabitants of the Basque Country, an autonomous community in Spain where Spanish, Basque, French and English are spoken. To assess the "neurological age," they used magnetoencephalography, measuring the brain activity of 728 participants of different ages and with different levels of language proficiency, and then analyzed the data using AI. Additionally, an independent group of 144 people was examined, divided by the level of language training. The researchers took into account the age, gender, and educational level of the participants.
