Some scientists believe that it is not fair to make comparisons between Alex with humans in terms of intelligence. They argued that even though Alex could communicate, he wasn't proficient in using logic expressions such as "if there is x, then there is y."
While this is still a subject of debate but the fact remains that Alex set the stage for studies into animal intelligence and consciousness. When he died in 2007 at 31 years of age Alex was among the most well-known talking parrots of all time.
What was Alex like?

Despite his vicious tendencies, Alex was a likable character, and seemed to relish the power that he wielded over his fellow hoodlums. He was a narcissist to two things in his life that was violence and classical music, particularly Beethoven, whose songs always brought images of blood and depravity for him. He and his group would drink milk mixed with drugs to prepare themselves for "ultraviolence."
Alex's background as a parrot at the pet shop was not remarkable but it was a great experience for him. Alex was quick to master words and concepts from his human trainer, Irene Pepperberg. Her thirty-year study on him revolutionized theories of animal cognition, communication, and interaction. She was credited by Alex for teaching her to apply the model of competition that proved to be to be effective in other animals and children with learning disabilities.
After her collaboration with him, Dr. Pepperberg went on to study other parrots like Wart and Griffin. She is now a professor at the University of Washington and continues her pioneering research with birds.
Alex is the youngest of the group, and also the most childlike. She's a bit of a tomboy and has been described as extremely teasing. She is also the biggest animal fan in the group. He could perform more than 100 vocal labels for actions and objects and was able to count objects up to six, and demonstrate math skills that were quite advanced for a bird at the time.
He also could communicate with other animals via sign language and had a solid understanding of grammar. He utilized a method of teaching called "rival model" which included two trainers who showed the bird what they were trying to teach it. The trainers would often switch positions to allow the bird to interact with both trainers and receive attention from both.
After the success of Free Solo, Alex was named a National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. He was able to accomplish many things in his lifetime because of his determination to character and the desire to live life to his own terms.
