Moon Knight's latest episode has a murder mystery and though Marc identified the killer, their identity may be more complicated than he realizes.
The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight Episode 4 “The Tomb,” streaming now on Disney+.
It has been established since the very first episode that Marc Spector, the primary persona of Moon Knight , has been keeping secrets from his estranged wife, Layla El-Faouly. He had hidden a burner phone in Steven Grant's apartment, one of his alternate personas with no memory of his time as Marc, that showed dozens of missed calls from her over the course of months. When Steven discovered the phone and answered one of her calls, it was clear that she had been searching for Marc relentlessly and was relieved to finally hear from him, albeit using a voice and tone she had never heard before.
After a complicated reunion, Marc is very clear with Layla that she doesn't know him as well as she might have thought. It is another attempt on his part to create some distance between them since Khonshu, the Egyptian god from whom Moon Knight's powers derive , has made it clear that if Marc retires from his service, Layla will be the Avatar he chooses next. In the fourth episode of season one Marc confesses another secret, one that rattles Layla to her core. He was there the night her father was killed , something he'd always kept from her. Marc also tells her who did it, but the answer may not be as simple as he thinks.
Layla and Steven were racing into Ammit's tomb to get to her ushabti, the stone relic that imprisons her divine presence, before her Avatar, Arthur Harrow , and his disciples. They mean to resurrect the goddess so that she may render judgment on the souls of humanity prior to any foul deeds they might commit and execute them preemptively, while Layla and Steven want to ensure she remained sealed away, on Khonshu's behalf. As each faction navigated the maze of tunnels beneath the sands Layla encounters Harrow alone, who told her that Marc was at the excavation site the night of her father's murder.
When she and Steven are reunited she summoned Marc from within his shared psyche and confronted him about Harrow's accusation. He admitted that he was there and told her that his partner got greedy and killed her father. Layla was horrified by this revelation and spun about in betrayal, linking that moment to their whole relationship and began questioning the very truth of their history with one another. Though he doesn't give his partner a name there are some educated guesses that can be made based on the source material and the clues the show has provided thus far.
Though Moon Knight has gone through more than a few iterations and retcons, in the comics Jean-Paul Duchamp, affectionately known as "Frenchie" to Marc, is a stalwart ally and trusted friend of Spector's. They worked together for years as hired guns with Marc in the role of infiltrator and Frenchie usually depicted as the pilot and gatherer of information. He is a kind man who loathes unnecessary violence and is the keeper of Marc's most precious secrets. There is also evidence that he has some role to play in the television series. In the first episode when Steven found Marc's hidden phone and scrolled through the call log there was only one that wasn't marked by Layla's name. That one read "Duchamp."
Comic book adaptations always require a shifting of roles for a variety of reasons, but altering Frenchie from a staunchly moral right-hand man to a greedy murderer would feel overly reconstructive. Marc could also be referring to the man who actually killed Abdullah El-Faouly in the comics, a partner of sorts called the Bushman who he took jobs from or teamed up with on occasion and in some continuities became his problematic arch nemesis. This would require no adjustments at all, but it would introduce a brand-new character in the fourth episode of six in a limited series . There is a perhaps a more elegant third option, that the killer was someone closer to Marc, and he is unaware of the truth.
The show has been teasing, quite blatantly , that there is another shared psyche in the crowded body of Moon Knight. In the comics this third persona is named Jake Lockley, a cab driver identity that has been described as the culmination of all the worst things about Marc and forged into a distinct identity. The accumulated darkness of Jake was so profound that when fighting a psychic vampire called The Truth, Jake let him enter his mind and the result was agony for the parasitic telepath and not the mind control that was previously effective on Marc.
The Truth also noted that Jake was keeping a host of hidden behaviors away from Marc, though the series reveals later that these secrets are something Marc has purposefully partitioned off, in agreement with Jake, so that he has a form of plausible deniability meant to ensure the relative stability of his mental health. In the third episode Marc and Steven are both bewildered after Marc is standing amidst a grouping of fresh corpses and a young man he is holding captive. This is only one instance when they each cannot account for time spent , but it is clear that something has been propelling them, usually with a terrifyingly violent aspect.
In the last episode Marc enters what appears to be a psychic domain that takes the form of an asylum. In his effort to escape he comes across a room with a jolting sarcophagus with muffled pounding coming from the inside. When he opened it Steven was inside and the two embrace before attempting to resume their release. As they explore a hallway they come across another shaking sarcophagus, but neither of them reach out to rescue whomever or whatever is trapped, as if some part of them knows that someone is in there that neither would like to unleash. Steven may feel this way because of his abhorrence for violence, and he can feel its ebb and flow from the coffin. Marc may not want to open it because on some level he knows that the true killer of Layla's father lies within.
To see Layla react to Marc's confession, Moon Knight is streaming now on Disney+, new episodes airing on Wednesdays.

A dad who abused his daughter for 20 years was finally jailed after she recorded him boasting about his disgusting crimes.
Raymond Prescott, 54, first attacked Layla Bell, 31, when she was just seven years old.
He taunted her and made foul comments, including telling her the abuse was the ‘best sex he’d ever had’.
Layla said her father would suddenly turn from her ‘best friend’ to a ‘sexual predator’ and described how he would brazenly grope her while shouting: ‘I’m having sex with my own daughter’.
She initially reported the abuse to police in 2001 but withdrew charges, claiming relatives harassed her.
She said: ‘I told my mum – but she wouldn’t even look at me or speak to me.
‘I think she was more ashamed that she hadn’t known before. She believed me I think, but was in shock.
When Prescott tried to attack her in December 2012, brave Layla set a trap and secretly recorded him confessing.
In the chilling clip, Prescott can be heard saying: ‘I can’t have sex with anyone else and enjoy it, so I want to have sex with you.’
After securing enough evidence, Layla passed it onto police and Prescott, of Clifton, Nottingham, was charged with five counts of rape.
He initially denied the charges but was jailed last May after being convicted at Nottingham Crown Court.
Waiving her anonymity to speak out, mum-of-four Layla, of Clifton, Nottingham, said: ‘The very first time he did it I was seven. He said he was proud of me for not wetting the bed and told me I was going to get a present.
‘He took me into the bedroom after everyone else had gone to school and laid me down on the floor.
‘He ran his hands up me and took my skirt off but I can’t fully recall what happened next. I blocked it out of my head because it happened at such a young age, but I knew it was very bad.’

Layla said the abuse continued and he would strike when everyone else was out of the house.
She said: ‘I remember he took me into his bed and performed oral sex when I must have been nine or ten. He would tell me it was our little secret and I was his special little girl.’
Layla started drinking heavily when she was just 14 after her dad groomed her, giving her alcohol from a young age.
In the seven-minute secret recording that nailed Prescott, Layla is heard telling him: “This is weird. It’s wrong and you know it. You were grabbing my arse in front of my friend.”
She handed the footage to police in February 2013.
Reacting to Prescott’s 12-year sentence, Layla said: ‘It’s brilliant that he got 12 years. The judge was disgusted by him.’
