I have all female characters, but know women that play male characters.
I hated, and I mean hated, the way female Tauren looked in Vanilla. Easily Top 5 worse character model to me (losing to female Dwarf, I think). I had also been fed a lot of fearmongering from my parents about being a girl online. And honestly, I’m glad they did, since I was a dumb 13 year old when I started. So I made this guy here (he turns 13 this year!!) and kept my gender a secret. I loved male Tauren, still adore them, and I will never change him more than giving him antlers.
Now, I’m 26. I have 36 characters that I’m planning on writing stories for, all of various genders. I believe it’s relatively evenly split between male/female, but there are some I just can’t have females for (still hate female Tauren, female Worgen are better but the males are so much better, and female Dwarves are still an issue for me).
This was just a long winded explanation of the gender of the character means nothing, it’s how the armor sits and how the character model looks, haha. But I do main a male while being female.
I play both based on which one has the better animation. So I have a fair mix of female tauren, humans, night elves, blood elves and Void elves and male and worgen.
Female here, I play both. It’s about 60/40 male/female.
Now the real question is; if I address you as a female either in game or on the forums; (without previously knowing you’re a guy) do you get offended by it, or just roll with it?
Ie. In game, we’re in a group for a dungeon, and you go AFK for 2 mins, and I say “She’ll be right back”. You come back and see that, do you just roll with it and not even mention it, or do you correct me?

Out of curiosity how many females players actually play female characters? I know some male players that play female characters mainly as eye candy. Is it the same for the female players?
Me as a dude, I play 99.9% dudes. But, I have one female character, out of respect and in memory of someone that passed away.
I am female and I play female characters. I have never felt the urge to play a male character, but I’ve known girls that do. More than one has said she did it to avoid harassment.
The main thing you have to understand is that girls are people. They are as diverse in their opinions as males or non-binary people. There is no hive-vag*na that makes us all think the same.
I play as my gender because I can’t connect with boy characters. Also because I have too much fun teasing my guy friends lol.
All my characters are female except for my void elf monk because I love the male void elf voice. I am also in an only woman and only fem characters guild, so I guess it is kinda common, but not a rule. I like to play as female because it’s easier to connect with my character and feel the immersion. But I don’t always say I’m a woman tho, and I just let people assume I’m a man playing a female character to avoid harassment.

I’m glad you said this, I was starting to get the feeling of déjà vu for a minute.
I think most people play certain genders for far more prosaic reasons. Take nelf for example. Everybody knows the male model is just…wrong. They simply look silly due to their posture, waist size and out of place muscle mass. Hence the predominance for female nelves.
Honestly when I see a male nelf in game, I sometimes have to remind myself it isn’t 2004 anymore.
Now take dwarves. Ever wonder why you never see a female dwarf? Beards.
Not to mention the dopey way they(the male nelves) jump. (Sorry guys lol not hate, just fact)
I’m a female who has always chosen to play males in every video game ever because I like cool guys, I like making cool guys, I have cool guy characters I RP as, and I like dressing up cool guys and watching them kick butt.
Now, true, WoW doesn’t seem to actually like giving us male player models worth a solitary crap or are very customizable, but with male Kul’Tirans, Night Elves, and Worgen (even if I nitpick them to death), I manage. I was very happy to see the Kul’Tirans added.
In a game like WoW I play all female characters (and I’m female) because character identity and attachment is all in my head and I identify with women as a woman.
In games like SWTOR, I play a mix of male and female, depending on which voice and romance I prefer for the all the classes. In SWTOR, character identity is more out of my hands, while I can still steer the character to personality I want, more of the characters motivations are based in the dialouge available.
In Kotor and The Secret World I played women, for the same idea. Silent protagonists make me more happy as a female character.
I like to tank, and a lot of my girls are tanks, which jives well with my mentality most of the time (I’m a cranky old firefighter gal).
My two dedicated heals or die are guys, because I like the burly orc monk healer and the huge draenei priest. I have a few boys I’ll tank on (like my demon hunter, since I decided I had enough female night elves!). Generally, I like to have a wee bit of story and like something about the character, so I feel like I have a mix that’s about 2/3 ladies and 1/3 dudes.
…Also it amuses me to have the healing boys and the skimpily dressed male ranged.
Play both. Idea is to be someone else for a while.
I pick whichever gender fits my head cannon at the moment though with some races I find one gender model is more appealing than the other.
I am a female whose 6 characters out of 9 are male. Purely for their appearances.
