Independent writer Robin Jarossi, who attended a special preview of the premiere episode at the British Film Institute in London on 5 February 2009, praised the uniquely British take on the franchise for balancing the new vision while maintaining the proven Law & Order formula. Jarossi specifically extolled the unexpected casting of Bradley Walsh, the excellent use of their London backdrop, and Chibnall's adaptation of the show. John Boland of the Irish Independent compared Law & Order: UK to the original, ultimately deciding that the former is just as engrossing as the latter, if its tone is slightly more jocular. Boland expects ITV "has a winner on its hands." Andrew Billen from The Times expects the series to be successful based on the premiere episode, and TV Times said that "those concerned can give themselves a pat on the back because this really, really works." The Daily Express' Matt Baylis described the new series as "a breath of fresh air", and the Daily Mirror said "It's all highly professional and heroic."

Variety magazine called the series a hit, quoting NBC Universal as saying, "Law & Order has won its slot every week and is actually increasing its ratings." While Radio Times reviewer Alison Graham felt the series' execution was adequate, she criticised its pacing and writing; the former for not matching that of the original Law & Order programmes, and the latter for "falling headfirst into a typically British legal-drama trap of the noble prosecutor, crusading to bring the guilty to justice while pitted against the louche, self-serving defence barrister." Whereas, on the other hand, The Guardian's Sarah Dempster didn't feel that using the original series' camera work and stylings was appropriate for British crime drama: "Fiddly. And wrong." However, later on in the series' run The Observer's Kathryn Flytt writes that despite her initial prejudices, the series "seems to have absorbed the pace and energy of the original without looking too tricksily derivative". In Australia, Melinda Houston commented favourably in The Age on the show's opening series, opining that the fusion between British crime drama and the US Law & Order franchise is like "a match made in Heaven." The premiere episode which aired on 12 August 2009, only rated 775,000 viewers, and was outside the top 15 rated shows for that period.

Barrister Caroline Haughey, a self-confessed crime junkie, said that Law and Order: UK made her cry:

the relationship between the officers and CPS was reasonably fair; however, the conduct of the Crown Prosecution Advocate in his talking directly to defendants and offering plea bargains was a step too far. Law And Order State Side is excellent, but the translation of that justice system into our own jurisdiction is not really possible – CPS lawyers do NOT invite defendants to CPS HQ, and do not run their own investigation.

As before, each episode is roughly one-half based on the investigation of the crime, and one-half on the legal proceedings. Unlike many police procedurals and crime dramas, Law & Order: UK spends very little time dwelling on the personal lives of the characters. It's all about the work at hand.

Law & Order is an American police procedural and legal drama television series created by Dick Wolf, launching the Law & Order franchise. Airing its entire run on NBC, Law & Order premiered on September 13, 1990 and completed its twentieth and final season on May 24, 2010.

Set and filmed in New York City, the series follows a two-part approach: the first half-hour is the investigation of a crime (usually murder) and apprehension of a suspect by New York City Police Department detectives; the second half is the prosecution of the defendant by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Plots are often based on real cases that recently made headlines, although the motivation for the crime and the perpetrator may be different.

The show has had a revolving cast over the years. Among the longest-running main cast members were Steven Hill as District Attorney Adam Schiff (seasons 1–10), Jerry Orbach as Detective Lennie Briscoe (seasons 3–14), S. Epatha Merkerson as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren (seasons 4–20), Sam Waterston as Executive Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy (seasons 5–20; later District Attorney) and Jesse L. Martin as Detective Ed Green (seasons 10–18).

Law & Order's twenty seasons are second only to its spin-off Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999–present) for the longest-running live-action scripted American primetime series. The success of the series has led to the creation of additional shows, making Law & Order a franchise, with also a television film, several video games, and international adaptations of the series. It has won and has been nominated for numerous awards over the years, including a number of Emmy Awards.

On May 14, 2010, NBC announced that it had canceled Law & Order and would air its final episode on May 24, 2010. Immediately following the show's cancellation, Wolf attempted to find a new home for the series. Those attempts failed, and in July 2010, Wolf declared that the series had now "moved to the history books".

On October 28, 2020, it was announced that a TV special titled The Paley Center Presents Law & Order: Before They Were Stars would premiere on November 12, 2020.

L&O UK is just what the title suggests; the L&O police procedural so popular in the US, "transplanted" to Great Britain. And for what we would consider the first 2 "seasons" (26 episodes, in the UK a season can be as little 6 episodes) this show was fantastic with the 3 police and 3 prosecutors main characters doing a great job. The stories are intelligent, morally complicated, and like the real world often don't have happy endings. And like the US version the characters take a "backseat" to the story with only small snippets of information about their personal lives revealed over time. And being the setting is the UK where guns are highly restricted the show is less violent and more cerebral which I enjoyed. Then...main characters began leaving the show. First it was Jamie Bamber (from Battle Star Galactica) who was one of the 2 Detectives investigating the cases each week. His replacement Paul Nicholls, never comes close to Bamber's likeability. Not long after that Ben Daniels the lead prosecutor departs and for me he and his co-star Freema Agyeman were the heart of the show. The chemistry between them, their ethics and actions in Court were compelling to watch. I mostly liked Daniels replacement Dominic Rowan but there's no question that by episode 30 (out of 53 total), not only the actors/characters of the show had changed--but the tone as well. Suddenly there was much more violence by the criminals and the police each week, and background details about the main characters began to emerge. As a devout fan of L&O in all the various series I often wondered what it would be like if L&O delved into the personal lives of the cops & attorney's like most cop shows do Well, guess what? That's what begins to happen with the show and it was suddenly too much information--the show became about the characters and not the crimes and..it just didn't work anymore for me. By the time Freema Agyeman leaves the show (after episode 39), it had lost 90% of its appeal for me. Eventually, the only character left from the start is Bradley Walsh and I understand when he decided not to continue--the show folded. Good thing. It was a GREAT SHOW, till it lost its actors and lost its way.
I was in the middle of watching the final season, but the show became "unavailable" in my location. What happened? Where is it available?
The “ripped from the headlines” we liked from the earliest US Law & Order have been replaced by emotionally charged social commentaries. Many of the shows involve children and/or police in some social dilemma and though I’m not saying they are not relevant topics it’s not what this series originally started as and the UK version just picks up where the US version lost our interest… it’s more like SVU with lawyers. I’d prefer to see crimes, investigation and the lawyers and leave the social issues to another show. Let’s just have some sleazebag rich folks making someone’s life miserable with more than some vague references to real crimes and/or people. Even some organized crime would be better but shows that end on a note that’s meant to elicit something from the viewer gets tiresome quickly and more than half the shows had some emotive issues. For a country that has a monarchy and a lot of privileged groups there’s a lot more fodder out there than cops, kids and the social plights of the poor or those in trouble.
For the record, I’ve been a fan of the original (“the mother-ship”) [[ASIN:B00GGLCSUC Law & Order]] series of the “Law & Order” TV franchise for most of its 20 year run (I say most, because I was kind of young [about 12 years old] when it first premiered and didn’t start watching until 7 or 8 years into the show, but I did “catch up” with reruns & DVDs — though seasons 4-9 were my favorite seasons in the series). I’ve also been a fan of [[ASIN:B01FL77TFA Law & Order: Special Victims Unit]] from the very beginning (though I did “boycott” the show for 2-3 years from the middle of the 16th season to the 19th season because of getting sick of all the propaganda & Big pHARMa/vaccines/politics-pushing) and I saw several episodes/a couple seasons of [[ASIN:B00DWH6520 Law & Order: Criminal Intent]] and 1 or 2 episodes of [[ASIN:B000E8JO2S Law & Order: Trial by Jury]]. However, to the best of my recollections, I’ve never really seen ANY of [[ASIN:B0055SNHQG Law & Order: Los Angeles]] or [[ASIN:B07DY286V4 Law & Order: True Crime]] which, as far as I know, are the only other two incarnations of the show in the American “Law & Order” franchise (I’ve also seen most, if not all of [[ASIN:B07H5RJF89 Law & Order: UK]], at least the first 2 seasons on DVD and whatever else of the series that is available with online video streaming — and I think that I *might* have seen some episodes of the French version of “Law & Order”, [[ASIN:B000RTH8P4 Paris Enquêtes Criminelles]] in reruns on TV when I was in Paris for 10 weeks in 2009, but I can’t be sure, because I’m not conversant in French and what I saw didn’t have English dubbing or subtitles)

In other words, I’m a pretty big & long-time fan of the “Law & Order” franchise, and out of all the series that I’ve seen, [[ASIN:B07H5RJF89 Law & Order: UK]] is one of my FAVORITES!

I LOVE the British accents and all the British slang that is used on the show (like in one episode, the older detective, DS [Detective Sergeant] Ronnie Brooks is reflecting/ruminating to his much-younger partner DS Matt Devlin about kids leaving home when they grow up, and how no matter how much parents want to protect them, that all kids
