Laverne Cox has never been shy about her transition. The 31-year-old Orange Is the New Black actress began the process in her 20s in New York City — an experience she recalls as being "completely different" from Caitlyn Jenner's very public transition. Though she's outspoken about the difficulties facing trans women, she's never truly opened up about what that experience looked like for her on a personal level — until now. In a recent Instagram post, Cox gave her followers a glimpse into her "vintage" pre- OITNB life.

"Yes, I went up to Harlem to get my braids 'did' at one of those genius African hair braiding spots. I was trying to serve up early @beyonce Destiny's Child t's. I was wearing a dress I got at the Salvation Army and I was super psyched to be wearing that Diorific lip gloss in black that I really couldn't afford but bought anyway with tips from my restaurant job," she writes.

Looking back on this time in her life, two years into her transition, she sees a "super cute young woman feeling it." However, underneath that she admits she was overcompensating because she wasn't yet comfortable with her appearance — mostly due to how she was treated by other people.

"I felt the opposite of cute," she said. "People misgendering me, calling me a man, and saying I looked like a man got to me and made me feel so insecure. It kept me from seeing myself clearly and loving what I saw. I look back on this young woman and want to give her the love I didn't know how to back then. It's not too late. #TransIsBeautiful."

She is one of Hollywood's most beautiful rising stars.
But, in an interview with The Guardian , actress Laverne Cox has revealed that she only recently allowed herself to be happy with her so-called 'imperfections'.
Talking to the newspaper, the 31 year-old said she'd long craved surgery to change her facial features - but now, with a different mindset, is happy without.
Happy: Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox has revealed that only recently has she allowed herself to be happy with her so-called 'imperfections
'I have never talked about the medical details of my transition, and a lot of people assume I've had all this surgery. Years ago, I wanted really highly invasive surgical procedures to feminise my face. All these years later, I have the money to do it, but I don't want it. I don't want it! I'm happy that this is the face that God gave me, and it's imperfect,' she said.
However, the prime time star - who plays Sophia in the hit Netflix series - confessed that a comment on her Instagram account (in which a person encouraged her to have a nose job) made her reconsider her thoughts, but quickly realised it was a silly thing to do, with her fans coming to her defense.
She said: 'My fans were like, that's the nose African Americans have, and what's wrong with that? My fans had my back. In those moments I have to look in the mirror and say, this is my black nose, and it's gorgeous.'
Wanted dramatic change: The actress once desired invasive facial surgery, but now would actively reject it
The comments come just days after the Orange Is The New Black actress gave a 7 year-old child, who identifies as trans, some heart-warming advice.
The child's mother, blogger Marlo Mack, heard the transgender actress was coming to her home town earlier this year and decided to go see the talk.
'I had shown M. the photo of Ms. Cox on the cover of TIME when it came out last year,' Mack wrote in her blog. 'So, M. had a vague idea that this was someone important who was also transgender...but I don't think she really got it until we showed up for the event.'

Because one of Mack's friends knew the organizers of the event where Cox was speaking, she and her daughter were able to attend an intimate reception held after the packed main event.
As all the starstruck attendees waited for Cox to make it to the reception, none were more excited than M., her mother writes. M. stood right in front of the door through which she hoped Cox would enter.
Mack writes: 'A few minutes later, Laverne burst through those doors, and the crowd went nuts once again. But this time, a tiny person in a flowery sundress stood between her and that crowd, looking her in the face, waiting to be noticed.'
Mack's daughter introduced herself. 'I’m M,' she said 'And I’m trans.'
'I don’t think Ms. Cox saw that coming,' Mack wrote. The crowd went quiet as Cox stooped to hug M. and look at her eye-to-eye. 'Remember, honey, transgender is beautiful,' Cox said to M.
Helping others: The comments come just days after Laverne publicly offered advice to a 7 year-old child who identified as trans
