On the show, kids ages 9 to 15 race to fill up shopping carts with all sorts of materials from the studio’s store to make the best crafts they can during the allotted time. No one else is better to host than LaurDIY, a YouTuber who’s known for her creative aesthetic and fun projects.
Her online video tutorials and vlogs have racked up millions of views, and kids love her trendy yet authentic vibe. Lauren Riihimaki is better known as LaurDIY online, where she’s been posting her crafty videos to YouTube since December 2011. According to her YouTube page, she’s “your DIY-obsessed bestie that is all about creativity, glitter & petting dogs.”
LaurDIY's channel currently has 8.9 million subscribers, where she posts all sorts of videos including quarantine DIY project ideas, new beauty hacks, shopping hauls, and vlogs every Sunday. LaurDIY , according to her Twitter page , is Canadian, but now resides in Los Angeles.
After her online presence grew and she gained a massive following, the 26-year-old inked merchandise partnerships with retailers Walmart, Target, Arden, Amazon, and Hobby Lobby. These shops now offer LaurDIY -branded craft kits, jewelry, plush, and apparel.
Like many YouTubers, LaurDIY didn’t intend on being a creator as a full-time career. She first began posting crafty, do-it-yourself videos as a hobby, according to Variety . As a natural introvert, LaurDIY doesn’t have a performing background and found it difficult to step outside her comfort zone and film herself on-camera at first.
“I’m like an introvert. I have no performance background,” she told Variety . “You start by sitting with yourself and talking into a camera — most extroverted teenagers aren’t doing that.”
Why crafts? LaurDIY credits her mom for encouraging her love of arts and crafts as a kid, “I was a toddler with crayons and paper, and I’ve been able to turn it into this whole career and brand,” she said in an interview with Variety , “Neither of my parents are crafty themselves.”
The Ontario-born vlogger was a local college student at Ryerson University in Toronto when she first started to film and post craft videos for fun, according to LA Mag . As a freshman, she would often film these art tutorials from her dorm room.
The lifestyle and craft vlogger's first video was a DIY t-shirt deconstruction, where she cut a skull into the back of the shirt. That video performed well and then, within a year of that, her following grew to more than a million subscribers, according to Forbes .
No, LaurDIY is not married, although she’s been dating Jeremy Lewis since March 2019 after she announced the news in a vlog . At the time, she didn’t address Jeremy by name in the video, but rather just that she was seeing someone (following her 2018 breakup with YouTuber Alex Wassabi).
However, the video’s thumbnail was a photo of the two of them, and so fans were able to piece together the rest, recognizing him from other videos on YouTube. According to his Instagram bio, he sells software and shares precious pooch Moose with LaurDIY. The two are set to launch a podcast together, she mentioned in a recent video .
