Laura Hillier, 18, from Burlington, Canada, died after years battling acute myeloid leukemia. As a farewell, her high school classmates decorated her casket like a yearbook, leaving loving notes in bright colored marker. They also dressed in her favorite color, purple, at her memorial ceremony to pay tribute to their friend, who accomplished a lot in her fight for cancer patients across her country.

Laura had a major setback in her treatment when her local hospital had a hospital bed shortage for transplant patients, placing her on a waiting list even though she had multiple matching donors for a stem-cell transplant that could have saved her life, according to CTV News. She had to undergo unnecessary chemotherapy to keep her cancer at bay. Her mother tried to find another hospital, but found out that the waiting list problem existed across Canada, and that treatment in the United States was too expensive.
She finally did get the hospital bed, and treatment, and even though it left her in intensive care, she left the unit in early January, Mashable reports. She was supposed to go to a hospital in California for more treatment soon after, but medical complications stopped her, and she died soon after that, on January 20.

She has received credit for speaking out about the problem with the waiting lists, and experts say her outcry has led to actual action across Canada. "Her poise, her courage, her strength and her pure spirit shone through right until the end," her family wrote on Facebook.

Laura's family is raising money in her honor for Coast to Coast Against Cancer, a foundation that funds stem cell research in Ontario. So far, the campaign has raised more than $20,000 CAD ($14,500 USD).
