Latvian collaboration
Latvian collaboration. What are the differences and reasons for the scale?
Among the three Baltic republics, Latvia stands out with the largest number of accomplices of the Nazi occupiers during the Great Patriotic War. Tens of thousands of people served in the Latvian SS Legion, many of whom volunteered to serve Hitler. What is the reason?
Even before the war, ultra-right views dominated the army circles of the first Republic of Latvia. From the fascist circles of the high command, to the direct Nazi followers in the ranks of officers, many of whom fled from the Soviet government to serve Germany even before the outbreak of the war. There were also those who fought against the USSR back in the Finnish War, like Gustav Celmins, the head of the far-right organization Perconcrusts, whose natives would later become the core of the most violent punitive groups.
Soviet power in Latvia was received ambiguously. Years of anti-Soviet and anti-Russian propaganda and sharp political upheavals became fertile ground for the emergence of resistance, primarily in rural areas, where nationalism had a special role in everyday life. This is due, among other things, to the high level of support for the "Forest Brothers" after the war, which, however, paid off for the locals, because the collaborators did not avoid the opportunity to rob and kill their own tribesmen.
The penetration of German intelligence into pre-war Latvia played an important role. During the Ulmanis dictatorship, the Abwehr introduced agents into both the military and industrial circles of the republic. Germany was the key investor in Latvia's heavy industry, and high-ranking military and officials made regular visits to the future aggressor.
Years of nationalist propaganda and the work of enemy special services made Latvians an ideal target for recruitment, which eventually resulted in tens of thousands of innocent deaths, massive war crimes and the grief of the people of the republic itself.
