If you are teaching yourself, this book has a steeper learning curve than LLPSI. However, for classroom use I'd recommend it above LLPSI because the content is far more compelling and the exercises are more useful.

Celebrity Chef Gaby Melian brings you into her kitchen to teach the best recipes she’s learned from all over Latin America. From desayuno (breakfast) to cena (dinner), merienda (snacks) to postre (dessert), your young chef will be a pro in no time. ¡En sus marcas, listos… fuera! Ready, set, cook! Have you ever tried empanadas? Made cheesy arepas for your family? Or shared homemade, sprinkle-covered chocolate brigadeiros with your friends? Travel the world of Latin America with 70 recipes developed and written by Gaby Melian—all kid-tested and kid-approved by America’s Test Kitchen Kids' panel of over 15,000 at-home kid recipe testers. A Spanish glossary, fun personal stories, and a peek into Gaby's own kitchen make this book a delicious win for all young chefs and their families! Kids can cook from breakfast to dessert with recipes such as: Arepas con Queso: These Colombian-style round corn cakes are cooked on the stovetop, then stuffed with gouda cheese that melts and gets gooey after a few minutes in the oven. Ensalada de Frutas: This fruit salad is the solution to hot summer days. Add orange juice, water, and ice to the fruit, stir gently to combine, and serve with plenty of juice spooned on top of each serving—the juicier the better! Panqueques con Dulce de Leche: A distant cousin to French crepes, these panqueques are just as delicious, and a bit more forgiving—make them as thick or as thin as you like, with a lot of browning. After cooking, they're filled with luscious, sweet dulce de leche. Empanadas de Pollo: Empanadas are a delicious labor of love. To make them simpler to prepare, this version uses store-bought hojaldradas-style empanada dough rounds and rotisserie chicken.
DESAYUNO (BREAKFAST) ALMUERZO (LUNCH) MERIENDAS Y BEBIDAS (SNACKS AND DRINKS) CENA (DINNER) GUARNICIONES Y SALSAS (SIDES AND SAUCES) POSTRE (DESSERT)

I LOVE this book! The step by step instructions are perfect for both adults and children. The pictures are so cute too & Chef Gaby is adorable! This book is going to be my go-to Christmas present for all the kids on my list this year - highly recommend!

My daughter loves cooking and has recently taken an interest in the Spanish language and Latin American culture. This book was perfect for us to make simple, delicious recipes together and to learn more Spanish words. There are great facts about Latin American culture and lovely personal anecdotes from the author.

Bought for granddaughter that loves to cook, bake. This was for her birthday

Gaby's Latin American Kitchen is a fantastic introductory cookbook to the exciting foods of Latin America. Chef Gaby Melian's bright and colorful cookbook includes 70 recipes from Mexico to Argentina. The book is written with an approachable and can-do attitude. Beginning with the Table of Contents and continuing through the Conversions and Equivalents, Chef Melian includes both the Spanish and English Translations for the names of each section and recipe. The book begins with a map showing what countries make up Latin America and continues like most of America's Test Kitchen cookbooks with cooking tips, kitchen equipment and how to perform general tasks like using a scale, chopping instructions, and how to measure ingredients. The book is sectioned as following: Breakfast Lunch Snacks and Drinks Dinner Sides and Sauces Dessert Each recipe includes the country of origin, difficulty level, ingredients list, equipment list, instructions to prepare the dish, and a beautiful color photo of what the finished dish looks like. If a dish requires additional instruction, Chef Melian includes additional color photos and instructions so there is clarification as to what to expect. I really appreciated this detail as she added useful notes in her recipes like, "the dough will still be slightly crumbly- this is OK!" When making an entirely new recipe this makes all the difference in the world. Sprinkled throughout the book are colored illustrations of Chef Melian and her friends both human and four legged adding whimsy and fun. The recipes include familiar ones like Chilaquiles Verdes and Arroz Con Pollo but also recipes I haven't heard of like Paraguayan Soup Cornbread and Maduros. The ingredients for the most part can be found in most household kitchens and for the ingredients that are not, they can be found at your local supermarket. The author also includes interesting facts associated with certain recipes. In the taco recipe she notes that in Mexico when you buy tacos on the street they are usually served with two tortillas per taco and explains why. My teenager and I have made Moqueca De Camaron (Shrimp Stew) and Chipa (Cheese Bread) thus far. Each dish was easy to assemble with delicious results. The Moqueca De Camaron had a delicious sauce which paired beautifully with brown rice. It was creamy, rich, savory and simply delightful. The Chipa is a delicious cheese bread made with tapioca flour which creates a bread with a fantastic chew like mochi. My family loved both dishes and I know we will be making them again. I found this book covered so much information but presented it in a fun and memorable way. It inspired my family to learn more about the different countries, learn and use Spanish terms (my family loves saying, En Sus Marcas, Listos, and Fuera - ready, set, go!) and gave everyone more confidence when cooking. The recipes turned out just like the author's pictures and tasted fantastic! The only negative I have for this cookbook is that it does not list the cooking time for each recipe at the beginning. This is one detail that is important especially on busy weeknights when the kids want to make a meal but I need to make sure it isn't one that takes too long and runs our schedule off kilter. Outside of that I found this to be a fantastic cookbook and one that individuals of all ages can enjoy.

I got this cookbook since my family is fond of Latin American foods. My kid loves to help with cooking and I thought this book would be a fun way for us to try new recipes. Though she is too young to do this kind of thing unattended (especially since she’s at an age where she’s only starting to recognize basic written words), she’s an enthusiastic helper in the kitchen and I’m hopeful a book like this will continue to encourage that as she grows. The book is well organized, with the recipes categorized by meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, snacks/drinks, and sides/sauce
