The Comprehensive TEX Archive Network (CTAN) is the central place for all kinds of material around TEX and LATEX. CTAN has currently over 4,000 packages. Most of the packages are free and can be downloaded and used immediately.

These are the 10 most common packages I use in my LaTeX documents. Particularly handy for rendering matrices. amsmath has a set of tailored matrix environments. For example here are three examples that use pmatrix, bmatrix and Bmatrix. ams also provide a host of new symbols, such as , , and and new alignment enviornments.

There are two simple commands that all packages must have: The command \NeedsTeXFormat {LaTeX2e} sets the LaTeX version for the package to work. Additionally, a date can be added within brackets to specify the minimal release date required.
