Nature, science fiction, architecture… it’s always interesting to read of the varied influences and sometimes unexpected sources of inspiration that latex designers may draw on to dream up their collections. Well we can now add to this list the Yokai , a collective term for mystical spirits from Japanese folklore.
Brenda Tamm is the young designer behind the UK label Insatiable Lust , and she reached out to us to share news of her second collection, titled Devious Desires, each design of which is based on a different one of these spirits (of which there are many). We took the opportunity to ask Brenda some questions about the collection, her label, and how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected business.
How did you arrive at the idea to base a collection on Yokai?
I have been fascinated by Yokai for a few years now. I first came across them on a trip to Kyoto where most homes had statues of the Tanuki outside of them, the famous luck bringing shapeshifting raccoon dogs. Shortly after that, I watched Pom Poko which features a large array of different Yokai. Over time I have just continued researching and reading about all of the different fascinating creatures and eventually decided to make a collection fully inspired by them, examining their habits and folklore tales around them.
Was consideration given to the personality/behaviour of the Yokai when designing the looks, or was it more a case of appearance/colours of the spirit?
Each of the looks is based on a different yokai and I took into consideration all of their specific personality and character traits as well as general appearance and colours.
The green look is inspired by Kappa, the reptilian water creatures. Kappa are known to be cheeky and devious creatures with a fondness for shirikodama, which is a mythical ball of flesh located inside the bottom, so thus I decided to cut the back of the dress extra low, revealing the top of the buttocks, to mimic this strange obsession of theirs. The finger chains are also supposed to represent a Kappa’s webbed hands.
The red look was inspired by Aka Manto, the red cloaked demon that inhabits school toilets, where he asks visitors whether they want blue toilet paper or red toilet paper. If they answer red, the victims will be either torn in half or stabbed to death. Here I really wanted to focus on the flowing of the blood, represented by the deep red hues and blood red crystals, but still make it couture unlike the scary urban legend.
Yuki-Onna or the snow woman, was the inspiration for the white look. The Marie Antoinette inspired crinoline, which has hundreds of chains and crystals coming down from it, moves ferociously when walking, representing the icy nature of the snow queen, who has the power to suck the life out of their prey.
Finally, Rokurokubi are women that work in brothels but at nightfall turn into lamp oil licking long necked creatures. The purple look was mainly inspired by their kimonos and cherry blossoms that often surround the Rokurokubi.
What inspired you to create a new latex brand?
I have always loved creating with my hands – I love to sew, crochet and knit. When I discovered latex it was like a whole new unique fabric to work with, which allowed me to create shapes and structures which I could never achieve through any other mediums so I was instantaneously hooked. The brand sort of just started itself, I just started making more and more and it just took off from there!
As a recent graduate, did latex play a part in your fashion projects which contributed towards your degree?
All of my previous latex work (except this current collection) was done outside of university as we mainly had to fulfil specific, more commercial, client briefs where latex would not have suited. However, when it came to my final year, all restrictions were off and I was determined to create my most eye-catching and memorable collection to date.
What kind of reception did the material receive, from tutors or fellow students, for example?
The reception so far has been great, all of my classmates and my amazing teachers are raving about the collection! They were all amazed about what could be achieved with this unique fabric. I set out to take latex out of its strong fetish connotations and more towards high fashion and couture and they reassured me I had done just that.
What is your own perception of latex and how it is viewed in society? What do you think the future has in store for latex as more mainstream fashion?
I personally don’t see it as a fetish item and often incorporate smaller accessories into my everyday wardrobe. It is such a unique fabric and there is still so much more room for experimentation and what could be done with it. I really see it becoming more and more normalised and worn more widely.
During the lockdown, the effects on brick and mortar stores are well publicised, but of course the pandemic has had a massive impact on the marketing opportunities for many mail-order businesses too. Can you talk about some of the impacts it has had for Insatiable Lust?
Like most, I have elderly members of my family who are vulnerable and this whole period has been very stressful. However, of course this has also led to lost opportunities like the cancellation of my final year fashion show and even a graduation ceremony but in the grand scheme of things, this is minor. Hopefully something positive will come out of all of this and there will be a surge of people being more interested in unique small local businesses.
