The nine-months pregnant wife of Joran Van der Sloot has spoken for the first time to insist that he is 'gentle, sensitive, kind' and 'no monster', despite being a convicted murderer and the suspect in the disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway.
Peruvian trainee accountant Leidy Figueroa – who married the killer in July – insisted her husband has changed since they started an unlikely prison romance four years ago.
She declared: 'My Joran is no monster'. She says the 6ft 5in killer is a 'different man' after finding God and says he 'seeks forgiveness' for the evil he has committed.
And in a series of astonishing prison love letters seen by MailOnline, Van der Sloot's passionate feelings for his 5ft 3in wife, who is due to give birth to his baby daughter any day, are laid bare.
Forgiveness: Leidy poses with a sculpture Van der Sloot made in prison for her. She said: 'He's changed a lot, he's a gentle, sensitive, kind person and I love him. I know he has killed, but he is now paying for what he did'
True love: Leidy Figueroa holds a picture of Joran Van der Sloot in the bedroom of her apartment in Lima, Peru. She told MailOnline: 'I want to show he's not a monster'
Van der Sloot, 27, is currently serving a 28-year sentence in a maximum security jail for robbing and murdering Peruvian student Stephany Flores after meeting her in a Lima casino in May, 2010.
The Dutchman also remains the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of 18-year-old American high school graduate Natalee Holloway in Aruba.
And then there's his indictment by a federal grand jury in the United States for wire fraud and extortion charges after allegedly fleecing $25,000 from Natalee's mother claiming he would reveal where Holloway's body is.
But his 25-year-old wife Leidy says her husband deserves a second chance.
In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, Leidy said: 'Many people judge Joran and criticize him saying he is a monster and an assassin, but when you get to know him, you know he is different.
'I want to show he's not a monster, he's changed a lot, he's a gentle, sensitive, kind person and I love him. I know he has killed, but he is now paying for what he did. He is asking God for forgiveness and praying every day.'
Gazing up at a large framed photo of her husband on the bedroom wall she says she can't believe he would ever harm her.
'I have never been scared of Joran hurting me, he has never mistreated me, harmed me or hit me. I don't think he’s capable of hurting me, he loves me too much.'
Earlier this summer there was widespread revulsion that Van der Sloot – despite his heinous crimes and a lengthy prison sentence - had found love and got married behind bars.
The romance which sparked so much anger is detailed in the many prison letters he sent to his young lover.
In one prison letter titled, 'My Queen, For the love of my life', he tells Leidy he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
'Gentle': Leidy said that Van der Sloot (pictured with Mohawk in recently released video) said: 'I have never been scared of Joran hurting me, he has never mistreated me, harmed me or hit me'
He wrote: 'Every day that goes by I realize something very, but very important, how beautiful you are, how extraordinary you are with me and you make me very happy. I truly love you.
'It isn't an obligation but I have decided to love you with all my soul and I want to spend the rest of my life next to you... in my eyes you are perfect.'
Van der Sloot says he wants to make Leidy the 'happiest woman in the world' and in another undated letter he asks her to marry him.
'I love you my princess. I want you to know I think of you every day, you are the best thing that has happened in my life,' he wrote. 'Marry me and share the rest of your life with me in the good and bad times.'
The delusional killer even suggests he plans to raise enough money to buy his young bride a house - even though he is not due for release in Peru until 2038, at which point he faces extradition to the U.S.
He wrote: 'While we save money and in a few years I will buy you your own house, better say our house.'
But all isn't perfect in this unusual relationship.
He hints that the pair have argued during prison visits. 'We sometimes fight, but I see that as normal in a relationship,' he wrote.
'The situation we are in, it isn't easy. I promise to you that the sooner I get out of here and I will be the same man that cares and loves you and I will take care of you all my life.'
Walking down the aisle: Leidy pictured outside the prison on the day the trainee accountant married the killer
Van der Sloot goes on to say that he's confident Leidy will finish her studies and that her three-year-old son Mathias (from a previous relationship) will attend a good school, adding: 'None of you will ever be lacking anything'.
He ends the letter: 'I hope you make me the happiest man in the world and become my wife. I love you so much my love.'
He signed off the proposal letter with 'Joran' followed by a drawing of a happy face.
MailOnline was shown the letters at Leidy's tiny two-bedroom rented apartment in Peru's capital city Lima.
The tidy apartment is filled with dozens of surprisingly well-crafted ceramic sculptures which Leidy claims Van der Sloot made for her and her son as gifts.
The sculptures, which include an array of animals such as elephants, dolphins, puppies and monkeys, have all been hand-painted.
One sculpture of a hand holding a heart is inscribed: 'Joran & Leidy Forever'.
Joran Van der Sloot's wife believes his claims that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of American high school graduate Natalee Holloway.
The Dutchman – who was the last person seen with Holloway before her disappearance on the island of Aruba – says he holds 'no responsibility' for what happened to the pretty student.
Van der Sloot met Holloway in the Holiday Inn casino in Aruba on the night of May 29, 2005, she was 18 and he was only 17.
At the end of the night, Holloway, a straight-A student with a high-school résumé filled with charity work and Bible study, wound up at a bar talking to Van der Sloot.
That night she vanished without trace.
In 2008 Van der Sloot was recorded by hidden cameras while riding in a car with a friend who'd sold him out to Dutch TV, and he half-explained what might have happened.
He claimed that Holloway and he had gone to the beach and that she was very drunk and had some kind of seizure. He said he panicked and decided to dump the body at sea.
The tape was watched by millions of people around the world but without a body there was no case to answer. Yet the video made Van der Sloot an international pariah.
But wife Leidy, 25, told MailOnline: 'Joran has told me he has nothing to do with the Natalee Holloway murder. He says they are accusing him of a crime he didn't commit and I believe him, there’s no responsibility on his side.
Choke: Leidy believes Van der Sloot when he claims he had 'no responsibility' for the death of US student Natalee Holloway (left) in Aruba in 2005. As for strangling Stephny Flores, (right), she said: 'The things he's done, they are behind him now... he is a changed man and he seeks forgiveness'
'He has spoken about it only briefly and I don't want to ask. Of course I understand, I am a mother too and I would want to know what happened to my child. I have a young son and a daughter on the way, I would not want to go through what the family of Natalee Holloway has gone through.'
In 2010 Van der Sloot allegedly tried to extort $250,000 out of Beth Holloway, Natalee's mom.
In return, he promised to reveal "the location of Natalee Holloway’s remains in Aruba and information regarding the circumstances of her death," according to a criminal complaint filed later that year.
Beth Holloway tipped off the FBI. She also gave Van der Sloot a down payment of $25,000. He took the money and ran.
He has since been convicted of killing Peruvian business student Stephany Flores.
He the met 21-year-old at a casino in Lima, Peru, and they arranged to spend the predawn hours of May 30, 2010, together at the tables. At about 5.30am, Van der Sloot persuaded Flores to go back to his hotel with him to keep gaming on his laptop.
As they started to play, an email or Facebook message popped up on Van der Sloot's screen: "I am going to kill you, mongolito (little mongoloid)," it read.
May 30 happened to be the fifth anniversary of Holloway's disappearance, but who sent the message is unclear. Van der Sloot, he later admitted, told Flores some of the story.
Flores hit him, according to the confession he gave Peruvian police, which he later recanted saying he made the admission under duress. He swung his elbow around and smashed her nose, which started gushing blood.
Then, he said, he just lost control, smothering her with a bloody shirt and throttling her. He took all the money she had on her, he said, about $300.
Yet despite admitting his role in a brutal murder and the widespread belief that he also was involved in Natalee Holloway’s disappearance, his wife Leidy still vigorously defends him.
'Yes Joran admitted to me he killed Stephany Flores, he has spoken about it a few times. But the things he's done, I've always thought that I don’t believe them and they are behind him now.
'God punishes us for what we do on earth, and Joran is being punished for what he has done. But he is a changed man, he has found God and he seeks forgiveness.'
The first sculpture Ven der Sloot made for her is a large two-and-a-half foot model of the two of them in a naked embrace. The sculpture is painted all in blue.
'This is my favorite,' says Leidy picking it up from a side table. 'Joran is so clever, he made me all these things.'
Van der Sloot also made Leidy's young son some sculptures which Leidy keeps in his bedroom.
One is a cartoon crocodile and another is a soccer player wearing the kit of the Barcelona soccer team with the child's name on the back.
The story of how Leidy came to be with the notorious murderer is as unlikely as it is shocking.
Leidy was selling candy and cigarettes to inmates at his former prison, called Miguel Castro Castro, in Lima when the Dutchman laid eyes on her.
Lax prison rules allowed friends and relatives to spend all day with inmates and Leidy struck up a friendship with Van der Sloot and began visiting him twice a week. Within a month the friendship turned into romance.
Leidy recalled: 'The first time I saw him I was a little scared because he's such a big man and the newspapers were saying he is a bad person. But when I started talking to him I discovered a different person, he was lovely and we used to talk a lot.
'I was studying to be an accountant and he was studying international business, we had a lot in common. We would talk about making a better future and about family.
'He liked to smoke so I would bring him Marlboro Red and Lucky cigarettes and candy and snacks. Sometimes I would take him home cooked meals and he always needed toilet paper.'
All prisoners at the penitentiary are allowed conjugal visits, which explains Leidy's unplanned pregnancy.
The love sick killer would pen dozens of romantic notes for his girl which he hid in the sleeves of illegally copied DVD films he obtained in prison.
Once he had watched the movies he would pass them on to Leidy with the notes tucked inside.
Each one is as saccharine as the next as Van der Sloot woos his new girlfriend. But Leidy admits she enjoyed the attention.
'He was very sweet, he would hide love notes with the DVDs he gave me at the end of my visits,' she said. 'He always gives me lots of attention like that and tells me I'm beautiful.'
Leidy has kept every note from prison and showed them to MailOnline.
In one Van der Sloot wrote: 'The most beautiful woman in my life and the only one I can share the rest of my days with, I love you forever.'
In others he said: 'You are my princess and you know it. We are made for each other,' and 'I feel like I know you more than yourself.'

Family treasures: Van der Sloot has even made these surprisingly good sculptures for Leidy's son
In one of his notes, sent earlier this year, Van der Sloot refers to Leidy's pregnancy as if she had not yet told him but he somehow knew anyway.
And amazingly the convicted killer has the arrogance to believe he will be 'the best father in the world' – despite knowing he will likely stay behind bars for the rest of his days.
He wrote: 'I know you are probably pregnant and that you are going to have my baby. I want you to know that I will be the best father in the world just like mine was. I love you and I care for you.'
Leidy says they will call their baby daughter Dusha Trudie Van der Sloot. The name Trudie was taken from Van der Sloot's grandmother.
Leidy is clearly besotted with the Dutchman and lovingly folded each of the letters and notes before putting them back in a small box she keeps in a cupboard.
For her, the notes are testament to her belief that Van der Sloot is a changed man.
The couple tied the knot in a private ceremony at Piedras Gordas prison in July, where Van der Sloot was moved to after they first met.
Prison officials prohibited video and photos during the midday nuptials and none of the groom's relatives attended.
Wearing a tailored suit and dress shoes sent by his mother, Van der Sloot told his bride, who was seven months pregnant at the time, that after he is released from prison, 'I want to marry you again,' and she told him the same.
The ceremony was officiated by John Barrera, mayor of the city of Ancon, where the prison is located.
The blushing bride showed off her growing baby bump in a conservative white 'mullet' dress paired with a matching shawl.
To complete her wedding day look, Leidy wore a flower in her hair.
The reception was held at Leidy's home in San Juan de Lurigancho, where she danced to salsa and celebrated with around 50 friends and family.
Smiling as she recalled her big day, she told MailOnline: 'It was a wonderful ceremony, it was perfect. Joran looked so handsome. We had a wedding reception afterwards with all my family and friends, we danced and laughed, it was just a shame Joran couldn't be there.
Love letters: Van der Sloot wooed his bride with many saccharine notes he wrote in Spanish while in prison
Notes: Leidy would receive romantic messages from the killer that had been hidden inside pirated DVDs
