The only exception to this dictum I can think of -- at least for single integrals -- is if the integrand itself is quite large, e.g., if it contains a double-fraction term. Mathematical FYI: Technically they are lower and upper Darboux integrals. The Riemann integral is defined using tagged partitions instead. Of course the two definitions are equivalent as per the sketch of a proof given in the first Wikipedia article.

I'm not sure exactly what it's called, but I would like to draw the line after an integral has been "solved," showing limits of integration, like so: There is a line with a 9 above and 1 below.
Is there in LaTeX a symbol or a macro for the average integral with a horizontal slash? I know about \\strokedint, but I'd prefer the dash to be horizontal.

In LaTeX, \\int is rendered as inside math mode. To specify the limits (or bounds) of integration, use subscripts and superscripts: \\int_a^b \\! f(x) \\, \\mathrm{d}x. If you want more integrals, you can just place these after each other. However, if you want multiple integrals with a single subscript you can use the \iint, \iiint and \iiiint commands. These create two, three or four integrals after each other, respectively. For more integrals, you can use \idotsint, which displays two integral symbols with the familiar dots between them.
