The famous American scientist, physicist and mathematician, born in Russia in 1929, graduated from the Moscow State University. In 1945, she was evacuated with her family to the USA. She worked at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she met the famous US mathematician David Hilbert. They had two children. The family returned to Russia after the end of World War II. Burgess was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1953. She was also awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 2004.
