The Last Of Us Part II is a grim game, but who said that laughing in the post-apocalypse was impossible?
Today's times are tough and more often than not, video games can be a great way to escape the tedium of everyday life. Well, this game may not help out with that. The Last of Us Part II is a dark odyssey set in a dying world that's also about the human condition, violence, revenge, and survival no matter the cost. There are no ifs and/or buts about this.
That being said, this is why it's important to make light of certain situations. This is where the undeniable power of memes comes in. As a fair warning, these ten gut-busting entries will tackle some spoilers in the game, and the provided pictures may be enough to give some aspects away. Now with that out of the way, it's time to share the laughs of us!
The world of this game and Red Dead Redemption II share a lot. Both start out in the snow, one. Two, both games have a large Western motif. One is literally in the West while the other is in a post-apocalypse which is reverting to old customs.
Not only that, but the emphasis on horses and the strong narratives make this meme both true and funny. That’s quite a name for a game.
The original The Last Of Us definitely had some intense moments of infected beating down doors and or chasing players. However, their numbers pale in comparison to some of the scenes in this sequel.
One of the most standout conflicts is toward the beginning with Abby. It had vibes of Days Gone thrown in there, making this meme’s joke on point.
The G.I. Joe cartoon from the '80s was cheesy and like most Saturday Morning Cartoons back then, was one big toy commercial. That’s why many of them had to include PSAs (Public Service Announcements) to “teach” kids valuable lessons, like the dangers of drugs and how to deal with school bullying.
Fast forward a couple decades and they were, of course, parodied online via a number of reworked YouTube videos. The scene where Dina tries to pass a joint to Ellie was ripe for a G.I. Joe PSA parody of a parody in that the lesson doesn’t make sense.
As if that Red Dead Redemption II joke wasn’t enough, another game The Last Of Us Part II could be compared to is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild .
No, Ellie can’t climb buildings as easily as Link and the world isn’t that open. Still, the stillness of open areas like Seattle definitely call back to Nintendo’s breathless adventure on the Switch.
“Can you pet the dog?” This question was asked so much in regard to games that a website was built. For those wondering, yes, as this meme indicates The Last Of Us Part II passes the dog test.
This good boy comes charging in early too. It makes up for all of the dogs Joel and Ellie couldn’t pet in the first game.
This may not be true any more, but one of the jokes that persisted online in regard to college kids was this. If one brought a guitar around to show off, Oasis' “Wonderwall” was the cliched song of choice to swoon the ladies and/or the gathering crowd of swooning ladies.
It would have been funny for Ellie to play this in the music store for Dina, but covering “Take On Me” was a classier substitute in the long run. Even better, players can actually play Ellie's guitar in-game, making the possibility of an in-universe "Wonderwall" highly likely.
This is, of course, a reference to the the classic line from the original Ghostbusters: “There is no Dana, only Zuul.” Joel and Zuul are similar names plus the fact of him not being Ellie’s father is also true for this meme’s joke to work.
He may not be called her dad, father, or whatever, but sometimes labels aren’t necessary. All he needs to be for Ellie is Joel.
This meme pokes fun at another classic film, Jurassic Park . Not only does this joke work with the split images of the flashback wherein Joel takes Ellie to a dinosaur and space museum, but Joel literally references the film in question.
He just can’t say the title for legal reasons, though, only referring to the franchise as "this movie I saw." Most fans of the film will get it right away but it still would be nice to hear Joel actually say “Jurassic Park.” Where’s the harm in that?
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was a divisive game at the time because the director, Hideo Kojima, hid a big fact about the game from his audience. Even though he showed Metal Gear's mainstay hero Solid Snake in footage covering areas past the opening ship section, that was all fake footage for the real star of the game: Raiden.
Needless to say, fans were not pleased. Abby’s absence from the press as the second half of the game’s protagonist may have a similar effect as this meme implies. Only time will tell if Abby's half of the game will age well but for now, she does provide some unintentional laughs.
What’s the deal with herding in video games where that isn’t the point? It is never fun. It slowed down the opening of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess , the first gym battle in Pokemon Sword/Shield , and of course, this game as well.
It’s an easy section to play in The Last of Us Part II , but that really isn’t the point of this joke. The Last Of Part II is a trek into the best and worst of humanity during such a dire situation, so herding a bunch of sheep really feels useless and inconsequential. At least it gave gamers even more meme fodder.
