It is not possible to give full description of particular cultural system in a single publication. This book is a result of selecting certain groups of signs and concepts, which are essential elements of Russian semiosphere. They are considered considered to be organizing Russian space of meanings and, at the same time, distinguishing it from the semiospheres of other cultures, especially Polish one. The study covers the following areas of Russian semiosphere: open space, apparently closed space (a city), closed space (a house), social space, sacred space and and the category of time. The category of open space allows to give general idea of perceiving space by participants of Russian culture. Additionally , by analyzing the meanings related to each type of open space and the emotions associated with their cognition, it takes into account the spatial components of Russian cult of earth and semiotic determinants of cultural practices related to the journey. The concept of apparently closed space seems to be the key to semiotic description of the most important cities of Russia and the semiosis linked to metropolitan and provincial cultural landscapes. The category of closed space provides one with a perspective of desctiptive semiotics of house. In the analysis, various types of houses are taken into account. Social space is considered as description plane of meanings associated with relationship between individuals, community and authorities, between the state and autocracy. It allows also to describe concepts of law and morality. The category of time functioning in Russian culture is analyzed in terms of mythological and historical aspects of its reception. The sacred space is described as particular type of social space, where two main issues are taken into consideration: the sacred space depicted on the icon and the space of the temple. The elements of sacred space which clearly distinguish it from the space perceived as secular, are in the centre of this particular analysis.
