Atkinson, lumber dealer, Deloraine, Man., has sold out to John Lochead. —A charter has been granted to the Three River Planing Mills, Three Rivers, Que. The planing mill of Davis & Eizerman at Mitchell, Ont., has been sold to W. Eizerman. —The Carney Lumber Company, Limited, of Massey, Ont., has been granted incorporation. It is reported that Tremblings & Traub intend estab- lishing a sash and door factory at Didsburj, N.W.T. The lumber business of James Armstrong at Park- hill, Out., has been purchased by W. H. Mark & Com- pany. —G. Stevens and A. F. Robinson have registered as proprietors of the Eastman Lumber Company. Eastman, Que. The lumber firm of Anderson & Greenwood, Flem- ing, N.W.T., was dissolved by mutual consent on January ist last. —J. A. Thompson, Areola, N.W.T., has been suc- ceeded by the Moose Mountain Lumber and Hardware Company, Limited. —McBean & Verrall, hardwood lumber dealers, Toronto, are building a new office on Bathurst street, south of the Grand Trunk tracks. —Shaw Bros, have sold their timber limit at Crooked River, N.W.T., to William Armstrong, of Fort River, who is building- a modern saw mill. —The Leishman-Maundrell Company, of Woodstock, Ont., has changed its corporate name to the Wood- stock Lumber & Manufacturing Company, Limited. —The Tait, Carss Lumber Company was recently organized at Orillia, Ont., by A. Tait. S. E. Carss and C. C. Carss. The capitalization is placed at $40,000. —It is reported that the M. Brennans & Sons Manu- facturing Company,of Hamilton, Ont.,will build a large saw mill on their new limits in Osborne county this spring. —It is reported that H. G. Buck and D. J. McLean purpose building a mill at Norwood, Ont., for the man- ufacture of cheese boxes, heading, and all kinds of veneering material. —The McLean Lumber Company has been organized at Windsor, Ont., with a capital of $40,000, the provis- ional directors'_being A. N. McLean, W. J. Pulling and W. T. Carter. —The A. R. Williams Machinery Company, of Win- nipeg, Limited, is being incorporated. The applicants are A. R. Williams, T. A. Hollinrake, F. W. Kischel and W. H. Young. —The Goderich Planing Mills, Goderich, Ont., has been incorporated, with a capital stock of $40,000. The provisional directors are J. T. Goldthorpe, John Lawson, and James Buchanan, jr. —It is the atfention of Thompson, Avery & Gray, whose saw mill at Clyde Forks, Ont., was destroyed by fire last month, to rebuild immediately, as they have 2,000 logs at the mill to be sawn. —Two old Ontario boys, Robert E. Skeith and Thomas E. Skeith, formerly of Cornwall but now of Stillwater, Minn., have purchased the lumber business of Small & Fisher at West Branch, Iowa. —The Oriental Power & Pulp Company have just taken tenders on the erection of a saw mill at Swanson Bay, Graham Reach, B.C. J. A. McKinnon, of Van couver, B.C., is manager of the company. —W. F. Brooks, of Minneapolis, states that the new saw mill of the Backus-Brooks syndicate at Rainy River, Ont., will have an annual capacity of 70,000,000 feet and will be in operation abovit May 1st. —The British Columbia Government has granted incorporation to the Great Northern Lumber Company, Limited, capital $25,000, and the Great West Lumber Company, Limited, capital $100,000. —John Thede, of Port Elgin, Ont., has purchased from Niebergall & Cameron, of Wiarton, a saw mill and i2n acres of land at Sauble Falls, Ont. Mr. Thede is considering the question of developing the water power. —The Smeeth planing mill at Goderich, Ont., has been purchased by J. T. Goldthorpe, who is forming a joint stock company to operate it. It is rumored that the firm ot Buchanans & Lawson will amalgamate with the new company. —The Montreal Lumber Company Limited, at their annual meeting recently, elected the following officers: President, John McKergow; first vice-president, George J. Dewar; secretary-treasurer, Harry Brown; manag- ing director, W. K. Grafftey. —Louis Labonte met his death in the mill of L. Frenchette at St. Ferdiand de Halifax, Que. He was putting a circular saw in motion when his arm caught in the belting and he was drawn between the saw and the wheel, causing almost instant death. —The annual meeting of the directors of the Freder- icton Boom Company was held in St. John, N.B., last month, when W. H. Murray, A. H. F. Randolph^Rob- ert Randolph, G. B. Dunn, Parker Glasier, E. L. Jew- ett, and L. L. Jewett were re-elected as directors. —It is reported that the saw mill of the Saginaw Lumber & Salt Company at Sandwich, Ont., is grad- ually sinking into the marsh ground upon which it stands, and that the company have under consideration the rebuilding of the mill on another site in Sandwich Bay further down the river. —The Dominion Government has given a charter ot incorporation to the La Ferriere Lumber Company, Limited, of Montreal. The capital is $125,000 and the purpose is to manufacture lumber, pulp wood, etc. Rodolphe Forget, Dixon Coyle and Richard Fielder, of Montreal, are interested. —L. M. Baum, of the Pacific Coast Wooden Pipe Company, Seattle, Wash., is considering the establish- ment of a branch manufactory in Vancouver, B.C. It is said that the timber of British Columbia is admirably adapted to the manufacture of wooden pipes for waterworks and other purposes. —The two-band saw mill of the Charlton Saw Mill Company, Collingwood, Ont., ran 156 days during the season of 1903, cutting 149,525 white and red pine logs, making a total of 15,633,143 feet of lumber, 6,113,000 laths, 529,220 tub and pail bottoms, 170,275 pieces of curtain poles, 4,069 cords of 4-foot slabs and edgings and 1,146 cords of short wood. —A number of Montreal gentlemen, including Lewis Skaife, G. A. Campbell, and J. W. Macdougall, have organized the Canada South Africa Lumber and Pro- duce Company, Limited, with a capital stock of $50,000. The charter is a broad one and enables the company to operate saw mills and allied industries, to deal in tim- ber lands, and to export merchandise of all kinds. —A new firm, known as Shearer, Brown & Wills, Limited, has been formed to acquire the business of James Shearer & Company and the Shearer & Brown Company, Limited, Montreal, and to carry on business as general contractors and manufacturers of lumber, sash, blinds, mouldings and other wood-wood. The capitalization of the new company is $500,000. —A. J. Burton has issued the prospectus of the A.J. Burton Saw Company, Limited, of Vancouver, B. C. Mr. Burton proposes to establish in that city works for the manufacture and repair of saws, filing equip- ment, etc. He hopes to interest a large number of millmen of British Columbia in the project, and as he is an expert on saws himself, the venture should meet with success. —The Telford Lumber Company, Limited, has been incorporated, the chief place of business to be Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. The capitalization is placed at $368,000, and power is given to purchase, build and operate saw mills, and to carry on a saw milling busi- ness in all its branches. The incorporators are I. M. Telford, D. H. Telford and H. A. Beard, lumbermen, J. W. Telford, mechanic, of Prince Albert; W. A. Tel- ford, of Benson, Minn. ; and M. J. Telford, of Winni- peg- —The Ladysmith Lumber Company, of Ladysmith, B.C., one of the youngest concerns in British Columbia, have passed through a successful year. Notwithstand- ing a disastrous fire at the company's mill at Eiddick's Junction, and the fact that the plant was shut down for three months, the output was over 6,000,000 feet of lumber, 5,000,000 laths ard 5,000,000 shingles. The capacity of the saw mill has oeen doubled, a new dry kiln and planing mill installed, and the shingle capacity increased to 100,000 shingles per ten hours. —The Madawaska Improvement Company, at a meeting held in Ottawa recently, decided to suspend operations permanently owing to a gradual falling off in business. Formerly many logs were floated down the Madawaska river, but recently J. R. Booth built a rail- road to his limits and connecting with the Canada Atlantic Railway. Thus the number of logs handled by water was greatly decreased and it was found that the maintenance of the improvements on the river would entail too heavy a toll on the remaining business. Polton is advertising for sale his saw and flour mills at Waldemar, Ont. —The Standard Lumber Company are establishing a wood alcohol plant at South River, Ont. —The handle factory of W. C. Crawford at Tilbury, Ont., was destroyed by fire on June 2nd. —It is reported that the Ottawa Lumber Company will shortly erect a planing mill at Hurdman's Bridge. —W. R- Wilson, of Kenora, Ont., has purchased a portable saw mill which he will operate on Rideout Bay. The Victoria Harbor Lumber Company, Victoria Harbor, Ont., have installed a new planer and boring machine. Reid Bros, have built a barrel and cheese box mill at Picton, Ont. They expect to turn out 30,000 apple barrels this season. —Hiram Walker & Sons, distillers, Walkerville, Ont., arc building a new cooper shop which wUl cost upwards of $26,000. —It is expected that the new saw mill of the Carney Lumber Company at Owen Sound, Out., will be in operation this month. —S. E White, of S. E. White & Company, saw mill owners, Lakefield, Ont., committed suicide recently. No cause is known for his action. —Mason's sash and door factory at Hintonburg, Ont., was destroyed by fire recently, the origin of which was lightning. The loss was $10,000. —The Imperial Lumber Company and Salmon & Company are building new saw mills at Latchford, Ont., which will be in operation this fall. —The Leiutenant-Governor has issued an order-in council revoking the license to do business in the prov- ince of Ontario issued to the Poulin Lumber Company, Limited. —E. T. Richardson, formerly of Little Current, Ont., has purchased a half interest in a large saw mill at Emo, Ont. The business will be carried on under the name of Alexander & Richardson. — The Cockburn Lumber Company, of Sturgeon Falls, Ont., who recently lost their saw mill at that place by fire, have a mill west of Lake Nipissing for the manufacture of broom handles. —George A. Mason has decided to immediately re- build his planing mill at Hintonburg, Ont., which was destroyed by fire last month. The mill will be over 100 feet long and will be equipped with modern machinery. —A boiler in Bonnell Bros.' saw mill at Hoath Head, about eight miles from Owen Sound, Out, exploded last month and completely wrecked the engine house. The crown sheet was blown out and the boiler thrown 60 feet. No one was injured. —The barrel and stave factory to be built in connec- tion with the new mill of the Ogilvie Mills Company, at Fort William, Ont., will be 50x85 feet and five stories high. The construction will be under the supervision of Mr. Chalfant, the company's millwright. —The Dyment-Baker Lumber Company, who recent- ly lost their mill by fire, have decided not to leave Lon- don, as was reported. They do not intend rebuilding at present, but have secured additional property for the purpose of extending their lumber yard. A mill may be built later. —The Riverside Lumber Company, Limited, has been incorporated to acquire the business of John Whiteside at Huntsvillf, Ont. Mr. Whiteside is one of the principal stockholders in the new concern, and associated with him are Charles Dinsmore, Alex. Bon- ser and William Thompson. It is probable that a new mill will be built on the Whiteside estate. —The Bryan Manufacturing Company, Limited, Collingwood, Ont., has been incorporated, with a capi- tal of $150,000, to acquire the planing mill and box manufacturing business of the Bryan Manufacturing Com pany and to carry on a general wholesale and re- tail lumber business. The provisional directors are F. W. Bryan, W. H. Bryan and W. T. Herrington. —The Manning Wood Fibre Company, Limited, has been incorporated by the Ontario Government, with a capital stock of $100,000. It is proposed to establish a factory at Peterboro. Mr. Manning, the promoter, has invented a new machine for the manufacture of excelsior. It will take a block 8)4 inches wide and 25 inches long. Others interested in the company are Thomas Porter, of Embro ; J. S. Brown, of London, Ont.; David Hogg, of Perth ; and John A. Irwin, of Campbellford. THE EASTERN PROVINCES. —E. C. Laverdure is building a planing mill at Jane- ville, Que. — The dissolution is announced of T. Prefontaine & Company,lumber dealers, Montreal. —The Drummond Lumber Company, Daveluyville, Oue., are offering their business for sale. —W. J. Moses is building a mill at Farrelton, Que., for the manufacture of cheese box veneer. — Rhodes, Curry & Company, of Amherst, N. S., recently received an order from Bethsada, South Africa, for the interior finish of a church. —A. Burgess, of Burgess & Sons, saw millers, Grand Falls, N.B., was recently struck by a log bounc- ing off the carrying table in the mill. The accident, although painful, is not considered serious. —Twenty-two lumber camps near Charlevoix, Que., were recently burned by a forest fire. They were the property of the Laferriere Lumber Company and of Mr. Anders, M. P. Eighty woodsmen escaped with diffi- culty. —The Union Bag & Paper Company, of New York, have bought out the Charlemagne Lumber Company, of Montreal, the transaction including the limits and mills. The purchasers have mills in various parts of the New England States and will export a large quan- tity of pulp wood from the limits. —Early in June a forest fire occurred on the Alexan- der Gibson Railway & Manufacturing Company's limits near Blackville, N.B. The mills were closed down and the crews sent to the woods to give all pos- sible assistance, with the result that the fire was con- quered before heavy loss had been sustained. —T. E. Babbitt & Son have about completed ar- rangements to re-engage in the mill business at St. Mary's, N.B. They have secured the river bank pro- perty above the highway bridge as well as the proper- ty situated below the Indian reserve and will erect a new mill, which may include a sash and door factory. A short time ago Babbitt & Son sold their business to the York & Sunbury Milling Company, who are now operating the mills at Gibson. —The International Paper Company are reported to have purchased the timber limits and saw mill proper- ties of the William Richards Company, of Chatham, N. B. The company had an option on the properties for an amount in the vicinity of $600,000 and it is reported that the option was exercised before its expiration on June 15th. The limits include about 166,000 acres, of which 115,000 acres are on the Taxis River. The intention of the International Paper Company is said to be to build a modern saw mill im- mediately and extensive pulp and paper mills a few years later. MANITOBA AND THE TERRITORIES. —J. J. Stevenson has opened a lumber yard at Ty- van, N.W.T. —Maltby & Cook have opened a lumber yard at Manor, N. W. T. —Mr. Ireland has completed a new sash and door factory at Virden, Man. —R. R. King has sold his lumber business at Mel- fort, N.W.T., to Nesbitt Bros. — Jacob Scott, lumber dealer, Stonewall, Man., has admitted John A. Stratton as a partner. —James McEwan & Company, who recently estab- lished a lumber yard at Areola, N.W.T., are doing a very satisfactory trade. —McEachren & Cummings, lumber, etc., Brandon, Man., have been succeeded by the Western Canada Lumber & Fuel Company, Limited.
