A day meant to honor the bravery of Datu Lapu-Lapu, the legendary hero of Mactan, turned into a scene of chaos and sorrow as a deadly stampede occurred during the annual Lapu-Lapu Day festivities in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

What Happened?

The tragedy struck during the grand reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, one of the highlights of the celebration. Thousands of spectators had gathered at Liberty Shrine to witness the performance when a sudden panic erupted near the entrance gates.

Witnesses reported that a loud explosion-like sound—later confirmed to be a malfunctioning fireworks display—triggered the stampede. Crowds surged forward, trampling those who fell in the chaos. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the sheer volume of people made rescue efforts difficult.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan declared a city-wide day of mourning and ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.
