Lanzarote and Tenerife expats could be 'banned' from buying holiday homes

UK tourists have 'abandoned' holiday homes in the Canary Islands due to a European Union rule change, it is claimed. The tourists with holiday homes in Lanzarote and Tenerife have taken the action thanks to an EU rule change, they say. UK citizens have been informed that they can only spend 90 days in Spain at a time. The strict regulations, which come years after the Brexit vote, have caused fed-up travellers from the UK with homes in the Canary Islands to think about quitting the holiday destination altogether. British citizens benefit from visa exemption for up to 90 days in every day period but, if they wish to stay for longer, they face a tricky residency process or have to apply for the golden visa. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, 'Irish citizens do not require a visa to enter Spain'. Their guidance adds: 'However, if you are staying for longer than three months, you have to register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros Foreigners Office. All EU citizens who want to stay in Spain for more than three months have to register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros Foreigners Office. The certificate serves as confirmation that you have registered, but is not recognised by the local authorities as a valid form of identification. The rules also come against a backdrop of some hostility to tourism amid concerns of its affect on property prices. Birmingham Live reports that demonstrators want to cut short-term holiday lettings and hotel developments, which they say are pushing up housing costs in the area. Some protestors have been pictured holding signs saying - 'We don't want to see our island die', 'Stop Hotels' and 'Canaries not for sale' in their objections to 'over-tourism'. Among them was one demonstrator in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who said: 'It's not a message against the tourist, but against a tourism model that doesn't benefit this land and needs to be changed. Another protester said: 'The authorities must immediately stop this corrupt and destructive model that depletes the resources and makes the economy more precarious. The Canary Islands have limits and people's patience has limits too. Last week, the islands' president Fernando Clavijo Batlle said he felt 'proud' the region is a leading Spanish tourism spot, but admitted that more controls are needed. The archipelago, which is is home to two million residents, attract a much larger number of holidaymakers each year.
