Day 8 features Laney Boggs (played by @rachaelleighcook ) from She’s All That. Apart from the very 1999 makeover/romcom theme, when I saw this in middle school, I immediately identified with Laney because she’s an artist too (although my art doesn’t extend to her performance art hahaha—be silent, be still). It was such an iconic movie especially in the late 90s/early 00s era (though there are aspects, as with most films, that would not be relevant today), and it will always have a special place in my heart alongside all those other iconic 90s-00s teen movies. These movies are hardly perfect—they’ve got issues, for sure—but they represent a particular time in my life when these kinds of films were how I got a sense of the outside world and how high school might be (I attended an all-girls, Catholic, Chinese, private school, so we were kind of sheltered and strictly guarded by nuns haha). And we learned a lot of things from these movies, from lingo to girl codes and friendship and music and whatnot.. especially because we didn’t have a lot of local films that we could relate to as much, at least that was the case for me. It’s a sad fact of ever-present colonial mentality in the Philippines—we were a Spanish colony for 300+ years, then Japanese for 2 years, then American for a few decades. I grew up on almost entirely western media. It’s why my English is more American than Filipino; why I’m most fluent in English and not a local dialect; why my references & experience of pop culture is also more western-leaning, etc). Colonial mentality probs aside, I can’t deny that I got a lot of my social and pop cultural education from books, comics, tv shows, & teen films like this one.
