I lost my job a couple of days after my birthday. It was a possibility that I knew could happen. Everybody at work did. This expectation softened the blow when reality finally struck.
What left a mark, however, was how quickly our plans B and C would fail.
Just like that, I was unemployed with no prospects. The lawyer said I had four weeks to find a job. Otherwise, I would have to leave the country. I had no idea that all it took for five years of sacrifice and hard work to disappear was a couple of bad weeks.
You regain consciousness. With the sun slowly descending from view, you surmise that you’ve been out cold for at least a couple of hours. You wince in pain as you anchor your body against a wall and attempt to stand.
Your grasp on your blade’s hilt tightens with each pained step you take towards the temple door. You inspect the features of the temple — previously hidden by the wire overgrowth. It appears to be built from an otherworldly combination of wood and steel. Wires crawl up over each block and panel, much like how vines would up against medieval…
You do a quick inventory of your equipment and supplies before setting off to the Elysian Temple. While meagre, the blade you still possess gives you some amount of comfort.
You take one last glance at Selyse. The weight of the journey ahead is painfully obvious to both you and her. With all the courage you can muster, you manage to bid her a halfhearted farewell: a simple nod. “Whatever happens, I’ll find you — like I always do,” she replies with a grin.
You leave Selyse’s hideout and make your way into the Wastes. Now just a speck in…
Chapter 13: Piecing Things Together
You find yourself back in reality, free from the clutches of Limbo.
“How do you feel?” asks a familiar voice.
“Confused,” you reply, rubbing your forehead as you try to ease your mind. “I was in an outpost — then in a hub, where I think we first met.”
“I… see,” replies Selyse. While she remains seated at her station, her gaze remains fixated on you — as if in anticipation of what you are about to say next.
“You seemed different then,” you continue, meeting her gaze with yours.
Lost for words, Selyse initially responds with nothing but silence…
Silence eventually ensues within the courtyard as the crowd eagerly anticipate what else the voice has to say. As the masses settle down, you find Selyse jumping and tip-toeing in a desperate attempt to see what’s ahead. You work your way through the crowd and gently tap her on the shoulder.
“So, what do you think?” Selyse asks with a grin — happy to see a familiar face once again.
“I’m not sure. Something about that voice feels… different.”
Before Selyse could respond, the mysterious voice speaks once again.
“Elysium is a place not known to many. Even fewer know…
You follow the crowd into the cramped, dusty alleys of the outpost. Much like the hub you visited before, you see vine-like wires stretching throughout the battered cobblestone walkways. Soon, a silhouette of a building emerges ahead of the crowd you are travelling with.
Eventually, you reach the end of the walkway. As the crowd in front of you disperse, you realise that the building you saw earlier appears to be a temple of some sort. But, more surprising is the courtyard you now find yourself in.
Brimming with life, trees of different shapes and shades — a long-forgotten sight…
“Let’s see what this memory has in store for me,” you reply.
Immediately, you hear keys being pressed in quick succession as Selyse dextrously inputs the necessary commands to her machine. “Settle in and try to relax. Your mind will synchronise with Limbo shortly.”
You close your eyes and prepare your mind for the emptiness of Limbo. Soon enough, you wake up within the vast unknown.
Like eyes adjusting to light, you acclimate your consciousness to the sheer darkness of Limbo. Much like before, a light soon appears in the distance — a sign of the fragmented memories to come.
“Do you remember now?” asks Selyse.
While brief, the memory you just saw gives you the clarity you need to answer. “Yes. I am… a Traveller.”
“Since you were a child. Young enough to both form memories as well as start with a… clean slate,” says Selyse. “That pendant you are wearing serves as a reminder of who you are, in case you lose your way. I assume you were able to see glimpses of your Cleansing?”
“I’m not sure what it was. I saw myself in the…
You find yourself in the middle of a clearing. Much like the weeks before, you see the sun — its rays gradually peeking through the mountains beyond.
In front of you is a picture of a woman.
You find yourself scraping your mind with whatever memory you can find of her. However, unlike before, remembering her now feels like finishing a puzzle with pieces that no longer fit together.
The Cleansing has taken its toll. Soon, her memory will be nothing more than fragments scattered about in your mind. …
You find yourself sitting on what seems to be a chair-like contraption. You try and open your eyes. While you can feel your eyelids separate, your vision remains enveloped by a blinding white light. Panic begins to settle within you as your mind races to figure out if you have lost your sight.
“Don’t worry. Leaving Limbo is rarely a pleasant experience. Your eyes should finish adjusting soon,” reassures the voice.
“Limbo?” you ask — still unsure if you’ve finally awoken into reality or not.
