Newborn rhythms and lost collective knowledge
So I had someone yesterday say that I wasn’t really breast feeding because pumping wasn’t breastfeeding. And I haven’t been able to get it out of brain.
She is right. I don’t pop my girls on the boob and go along my merry way. They do not nurse. They never have. Being 8 weeks early made latching difficult.
Instead I spend 45 minutes a day five to six times a day attached to a pump. I pump anywhere from 6-10 ounces a session, averaging about 40 ounces a day. I have bottle dishes every day, which includes my six sets of pump parts and a dozen or so sets of bottles. I’ve been up at 2 am, 3am, 4am, pumping while my babies are fast asleep just to try to increase milk and make sure they have enough for their morning bottles. I have pumped in parking lots, while driving, in the middle of restaurants, I carried a pump around the bars of Chicago for Aubree’s 21st birthday.
In most ways I work twice as hard to give these girls mama’s milk than I ever did when I nursed Gideon. Ive done both and this is exponentially harder, but it’s giving me the same results. Two happy, healthy breast milk fed infants. They love their mama milk, and I love that I’ve been blessed to live in a modern world where I am able to pump to be able to give it to them.
I’ve earned the title of badass breast feeder and pumper and I’m going to wear it with pride. No one is going to take away that title from me. I’ve worked too hard to get to this point. I’m so proud that we are still here. Still truckin’ through, taking one day at a time.
R’s sleep has been crap today. He sleeps best if I hold him but he also sleeps alright if I swaddle him, hold him until he is out, then put him in his pack ‘n’ play. So I thought, Hey, the Baby K’tan doesn’t fit, but I could try to get him into the Ergo on my own! I knew he’d love it, I could get stuff done, it seemed perfect.
The strap around my hips hurt so damn bad.
I knew I wasn’t going to be able to wear him in the Ergo as soon as I started putting the thing on. I get that I’m only 2 weeks out from my c-section but it just makes me so angry. I have always wanted to baby wear and it’s probably going to be another week or two before I even try again.
If you bought/received the Ktan new, do you still have the packaging? If so, you might try to see if a local store has them and would be willing to exchange it out for you. They can be fairly tricky to size! Most people find they’re more comfortable and secure a size down from the recommended sizing.
I find it MUCH more comfortable to have the waistband of a structured carrier higher - it kills my hips but is great on my natural waist. That would be above your incision, so that might help!
Also… rest! 2 weeks is still so soon! Netflix and couch. I know there is stuff to get done, but take care of yourself and your baby and do the bare minimum of everything else for a few more weeks!
