James Patterson, with co-writer, Mark Sullivan, has put together his third “Private” novel staring Jack Morgan, owner and operator of a powerful worldwide investigative agency. Morgan is immediately overwhelmed with murder cases. A group known as “No Prisoners” is terrorizing Los Angeles with random group massacres and threatens to up the ante if the City doesn’t meet their outrageous monetary demands. Private is asked by the mayor of L.A. to discretely resolve the murders before her city falls into panic mode. A powerful Hollywood couple and their children are reported missing after returning to Los Angeles from filming a movie in Vietnam. Jack Morgan is tasked by the head of the film production company to investigate their disappearance before the media gets wind of it. The case quickly turns international. As if Jack Morgan hadn’t enough on his plate his errant twin brother, Tommy, is charged with murder. Tommy, hoping to get off the hook for murder at any cost, threatens to implicate Jack in the murder if his demands for money and ownership of Jack’s company are not met. The triple-plotted story is action packed, never slows, and consistently holds the reader’s attention. Truth and reality are often stretched to their limits but Patterson and Sullivan skillfully weave a story of intrigue to keep the pages turning. Private L.A. is a fun read. I give it a 4 out of 5 rating.

For reasons unknown, this book was written with two plots that have no relationship to each other. Most plot turns were predictable; those that were not related to storylines I'd stopped caring about at all. The writers may have visited Los Angeles a couple of times, but they know little about what it is like to live here. They drive all over the place but never get caught in any traffic (even at dusk on Halloween). They call Pacific Coast Highway "Highway 1," whereas most Angelenos don't use that term for that thoroughfare anywhere south of the split from the 101. The Huntington Beach Pier is moved to Los Angeles--not just the county, but the city, and into LAPD jurisdiction. That mistake could have been fixed easily, by transferring all that action to the Venice Pier, but the authors simply didn't care. A woman has a fling and is seized by guilt when she finds out that her booty call is married and has two kids. Although supposedly a smart adult, she is unable to place responsibility on the guy--who wore no wedding ring and implied he was free. She has to have this pointed out to her by a therapist, even though she supposedly has an academic background and is a therapist herself. Naturally, she has multiple therapeutic specialities--working with children, helping PTSD patients--and has an "academic" background. She lives in a million dollar home (a detached single-family dwelling in Santa Monica), with no explanation given as to why she is that wealthy. There are way too many names given, for stock characters who are about to be killed. The point of view changes radically, jarringly, even in the middle of action sequences. These types of problems made the book a lot of work to read. Not "thought-provoking" . . . work. Characters do a lot of things for reasons that are hard to fathom at all . . . until one realizes that they are doing them because it is convenient for the writers. Near the end, the main characters take enormous risks with their lives and futures by engaging in illegal and dangerous activities in Mexico, when it would have made more sense to walk away and let poetic justice take its course. They are thereby able to achieve a "storybook" ending (that is no more believable than the rest of the book), but their motives for the extreme recklessness are never explained. This book was easy to put down, and I finished it out of a vague curiosity only, not because I truly cared what happened to the characters. If this is representative of Patterson's actual work, I will be taken aback--given his popularity. I hope he's better than this, and that he and Sullivan simply phoned this book in. Essentially, this was over 400 pages of broadcast television writing, rather than a satisfying crime book.

Patterson has done it again! Movie stars kidnapped with their children! A crime mogul out to take the PRIVATE agency by any means possible! One of the detectives in an emotional breakdown after a violent attack! Mexican drug lords trying to take out the PRIVATE detectives! And, through it all a crazy serial killer blackmailing the City of Los Angeles and killing its citizens! Why, it is enough to leave the reader's head spinning. How can one small group of PIs handle so much in so little time; and yet, they believe that they can, even though they are seriously injured one at a time! One has a broken back, one a violent attack leaves her in a sort of trance, another has a head wound. How can they continue? The excitement is compelling. The characters are carefully drawn and the settings change by the moments. In typical Patterson fashion, Jack holds things together while jetting from place to place, wounded physically, no sleep and comes up with an ending that defies the imagination of the reader. You gotta read this one!

Another hit for me.

"A REIGN OF TERROR IN THE CITY OF ANGELS. It looks like the whole world is about to discover whether Private are really as good as they say they are..." During the course of running this blog, I've been asked several times why I review entire series. Don't you get bored? I'm asked. Don't your reviews start to sound the same if you review tons of similar books? Yeah, maybe, but I'm a little obsessive. I like reviewing a book upon completion, whether it be a short, cluttered mess or an in-depth look, book blogging is a hobby. I also like the idea of giving people that are looking for reassurance about a series an entry-by-entry look. The beginning novel to a series might be utterly sensational or complete crap, but that doesn't mean future entries will be. I'm persistent, so I apologise for any monotony in reviews. What prompts this you ask. Well, I'm an avid fan of Mr Patterson's works, and out of all the authors I've read since I started this blog, his books are likely some of the most reviewed, and that can sometimes lead to fatigue on my part and repeated critique (probably what you'll see in this review). So that's why. I love this little hobby and my obsessive parts love it too. Synopsis (This time round, I'll be using the blurb that comes with my edition of the book.) Jack Morgan is having a bad week. His twin brother is up on a murder charge and determined to frame him for the crime, and one of Jack's clients has just called to report the burnt bodies of four surfers on his beach. But what seems like a random mugging gone wrong soon reveals something far worse - a killer calling themselves No Prisoners is holding the city to ransom. And there's more bad news: Hollywood's golden couple, Thom and Jennifer Harlow, have been kidnapped, along with their adopted children. It looks like the whole world is about to discover whether Private are really as good as they say they are... Plot - 4/5 Stars Private L.A. sees us returning to, well, L.A. Back with series' protagonist Jack Morgan (other books in the series sometimes follow other characters around the world, all connected to Private, Jack's investigative company), we follow his group as another batch of unimaginable cases comes barrelling his way. Yes, that's pretty much the series' formula; in fact, that's pretty much Patterson's formula; but, don't be put off, Private L.A. is a tight thriller with salacious secrets, vicious violence, and heroic happenings. Recently I'd been having fatigue over the series, so a little break has brought me right back to being in the mood for an easy-going suspense novel that I know will ratchet my heart rate right up. Private L.A. does that, and then some. Sure, there are some ludicrous elements that beggar belief, and some wildly implausible coincidences that push our characters to the right answer, but fun is fun. The cases themselves are developed well and full of nifty surprises to keep you on your toes. They're interesting and intricate, and the authors (Patterson and Mark Sullivan) show genuine care as to how the stories shape and progress. The finale offers satisfaction galore while also keeping some minor, but exceptionally riveting, plots hanging, leading to the next time we join Jack and his gang of wonderful misfits. Pace - 5/5 Stars Even at near 500 pages, Private L.A. is a smooth, eventful ride. There's your perfect balance between action and exposition; some nice development for a few main players; and sibling rivalry that'll cut to the core. Characters - 4/5 Stars Jack Morgan is a solid protagonist, and he's definitely one of my favourites. Intelligent and capable, Private L.A. intensifies his relationship with his twin brother Tommy with a game of cat and mouse that acts as an admirable backdrop to the bigger plots. This sibling battle is one of the highlights of the series, and I am glad the authors have kept it going. Justine also proves to be interesting. Previous entries have seen her as more of a background character in most ways, an on-again off-again romance for Jack. In this entry, some fantastic development surrounds her, shooting her up the cast list. The rest of the characters fill out nicely with strong personalities and unique skills, but their development is nonexistent. Villains have solid motivations for their actions, and those that don't are readily dispatched with a healthy dose of karma. All in all, great stuff. Writing - 4.5/5 Stars There are maybe too many instances of deus ex machina, but I can't muster any real frustration to care. They aren't bad examples of it, and they do wonders for moving the plot forward. As usual, short chapters keep things condensed but colourful, showcasing the authors' ability to use minimal details to create incredible scenes. It's simple. Overall - 4/5 Stars Another hit for me. Roll on the next entry!

Another set of crimes for Jack to get solving

I am a long time fan of James Patterson and love the various series's he writes. I get quite excited when a book of his is released and am straight to the library to get my hands on a copy. Private L.A. is the seventh book in the Private series. For anyone unfamiliar with this series, it revolves around Private Investigator Jack Morgan who owns an investigation agency with offices around the world, where they are hired by many high profile clients. Previous books have included Berlin, London and Australia. This book, as the title implies is set in Los Angeles. Private LA has multiple storylines going on. The main one is the apparent kidnapping of celebrity family the Harlows. The couple and their three children have gone missing and Jack Morgan and his team are called in to investigate. There are the usual twists and turns...have they been kidnapped? Are they still alive? Who would want to take them? As always, I found myself trying to play detective myself and work out who did it and why. There is a large cast of suspects and motives which kept me pondering throughout. The second storyline was around a group of terrorists called 'No Prisoners' who are holding the local authority to ransom. This, in my opinion had real potential to be a great storyline of threat and violence, and I might have lost it somewhere along the line, but it never really took off in the way I was expecting which was disappointing. The other storyline is around Jack's brother who is on trial for murder and definitely involved with the wrong sort. As readers we see Jacks brother trying to involve Jack in the trial. There is definitely legs to keep this running for a while yet. It would feed my curiosity to know more about Jack and his past. I have to be honest and say that this book didnt engross me in the way previous books have. I am an addict to the Alex Cross series and the Michael Bennett series, but the Private ones just don't seem to captivate me in quite the same way. Don't get me wrong, it is a good read, and the short chapters are a great way to flit between scenes and the different storylines. But there is just a spark missing for me. It's almost as if there are too many plots going on, which dilutes them all for me. I love the character of Jack Morgan who is a clever man with an edge to him. But my favourite character is in this book is Justine who works with Jack, and has also had a relationship of sorts with him in the past. I am kind of wanting to knock their heads together to sort themselves out. In this book Justine goes through s
